I'm going to be attending the CQB clinics and, if I'm any good, matches, at Borden this spring/summer.

I will be shooting a Stag AR-15 with the .223 Wylde chambre.

What brand of ammo and grain of bullet do most people shoot at these matches? I want to buy factory (I'm a hand-loader but don't have the brass or the time just now).

Recommendations?

Thanks.

For CQB anything is good.....whatever is cheap. That being said the MFS Zinc Steel cased non corrosive ammo is good bang for your buck.

"...if I'm any good..." Don't worry about that. Shoot the matches anyway. Match shooting is great fun and you'll meet all kinds of fabulous people.
If you're not going to take the time to work up a load, you'll have to try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo your rifle shoots best.

I was gonna suggest shooting Winchester White Box 55 gr FMJ fodder since under 35 yards, it's all good. :D

Cannot forget that the Win brass is traditionally pretty darn good! :)

Cheers,
Barney

I'm with Hungry; If you are wanting to keep the brass and reload it, I'd recommend sourcing Winchester whitebox ammo.

I also wouldn't run the MFS steel cased stuff, unless maybe through a $600 Norinco. Even then, I wouldn't use it for matches.

Any current NA commercial with brass case should do fine. I shot a CQB match last year with MFS with no issues but Gunnerlove knows a hell of a lot more about this stuff than me.

That being said, 500 rounds through an semi-auto AR will likely not be a big problem (flame suit on). I`m slowly going through the rest of my case but will be competing with handloads from here on in since I loaded up a stash this winter.

Don`t worry about being good enough. Just have fun, be safe and learn lots. That`s what it`s all about for me. I only compete against myself and maybe my buddies. I have a good friend with a high $$$ custom AR and I WILL BEAT HIM AT LEAST ONCE THIS YEAR WITH MY NORC :D

On 10/07/2010, a test and evaluation began on a new .223 caliber rifle ammunition. This ammo is manufactured by MFS 2000 Inc in Russia. This bi-metal jacketed ammo uses a non corrosive primer and the steel case is coated with zinc rather than a lacquer finish. This zinc coating will prevent chamber wear on the rifle. The current rifle ammunition used in training by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is the Federal 55gr 5.56mm XM193.

Deputy Post tested the MFS ammo during the Patrol Rifle class for FTEP 10-01. The MFS ammo was shot in a side by side comparison against the Federal XM193. Both rounds were fired through two identical and dedicated guns during the testing period. The test weapons were Bushmaster XM-15 AR-15 M4 style rifles. 885 rounds of ammo were fired through each rifle during the test period. Neither rifle was cleaned or lubricated during this test.

Both Bushmaster Rifles shooting the Federal XM193 and the MFS ammo experienced no ammo related malfunctions. Both weapons were broken down and examined after the test was complete. Both weapons had the same level of carbon buildup on the bolt carrier group and in the upper and lower receiver.

This ammo performed at the same level as our current Federal XM193 practice ammunition. The MFS .223 ammunition is substantially cheaper and represents a yearly department savings of $4,476.00 over the Federal XM193 round.

The MFS ammo exceeded my expectations in reliability and performance. I was very pleased with MFS ammo and would recommend it for use for the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

Hmm...

Sounds like better-quality steel ammo than usual, eh?

Still, I plan to reload the brass at some point (as soon as my boss-types relinquish me from 70-hour-weeks). I think I'll go with the Winchester White Box.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone!

Ol'Blacky!
