Ammo Recommendations For Duck And Geese

Now an after thought, what choke to use?

Back when I used to hunt, it was a modified. Now Browning has everything in between.....

Modified is the tube you are most likely to find in any of my shotgun, I do use improved cylinder and light modified a fair bit too. I do know I won't spend the money for after market extended chokes, until I have patterned a load through all my factory chokes first.

Any brand that paterns well. #2 Or bb steel 3" shells.

Not much to add to what has been said...but I will say this...I don't find that expensive shells kill birds any better then cheap shells if you put the shot on the target. Thats why I use the cheap Winchester Xpert. The red hulls also make it easier to find them on the floor. As for shot sizes, I like changing them up. I’ll use 4 shot for early season duck and small divers. I’ll use 2 shot for late season mallards. I’ll also change it up on geese where I’ll typically use BB, but will switch to T shot if I expect to be grinding up the meat for something like sausage as there is less chance of pellets getting caught up in the grinder

2-3/4" and #3 or #4 steel going 1500 FPS, depending on duck size, and Imp Cyl choke over decoys. Later I'll go to MOD, but same ammo.

I use Tungsten Matrix #5's on ducks over decoys. They're great.

For MY gun, I use 3in #3 or #4 for mallards, and 3in #2 or BB for Canada geese depending on the situation and if they're decoying or not.

Our group uses 3" loads of #2 for all waterfowl, one load, no changing loads between flocks.

Same, except I go with 3.5" shells going 1550fps...

Kent Faststeel 3” 1.25oz #2’s. I field hunt over decoys and use that on both ducks and geese at fairly
close ranges.

With my Maxus I shoot Winchester Blindside 1 5/8oz BB with a Kicks ported choke.

Tired about 10 different brands of BB shot and this was the best with my choke.

I use Remington sportsman 3" #2 steel shot for ducks. Works great and I havnt done much testing with #2s...


All the guys i hunt with use Blackcloud BB with good results (SBE2, A400, M2) I switched when I found wads in the field after a hunt still filled half full with steel shot....

Brother in law that I'll be hunting with recommends Hevi Shot. His kids use Winchester Expert as its cheaper.

Interesting. I use 3" BC in #2s or 4s. I'm happy with them but I'm not a great shot either. Wonder if they remedied this issue with the shot stuck in the wad?
