Just wondering what everyones thoughts are on how long is safe to keep ammo ?

I have a couple thousand rounds of Wolf reloads in .45, 9mm, .44 mag thats been sitting for a couple years, kept dry out of the humidity in original boxes.

Questions:
Can ammo become dangerous just sitting there getting old ? I don't mean shooting the stuff, just dangerous in storage.

What are some of the effects of shooting old ammo ? What can potentially happen ? And what is considered old ?

I tried searching but it doesn't seem to be working.

as far as i know after a while the powder does start to degrade and become unstable. however, i don't think that just a couple of years would do this providing that, as you said, they were kept in a cool dry place away from direct sunliught and water/humidity. i can take your .45acp ammo off of your hands if you are worried!!! lmao :)

There was a lot of surplus ammo put on the market over the years. Most of this ammo is a lot older than one would think. 8mm and 303, and it all worked. i have cases of 8mm, its older than my kids...26....and it works great.

Ammo

I am afraid your Ammo is way over it's expiry date....
STOP shooting and contact me immediately...
I will arrange for pick up and proper disposal of it...

Buy some M2A1 tins and pop in a bag of silica gel. Should last 50-100 years. The civie primers will likely die first. There a tons of threads on AR15.com on this very subject.

Thanks for the reponses.

I probably should have stated that I had no worries about 2 year old ammo, but rather it made me think about ammo life when I last looked at this ammo sitting unused for 2 years wondering just how long its gonna take for me to shoot it.

I best be getting off my azz and out to the range anyway. Jeez time does get away from a person doesn't it ?
