Ammo Shortage - Updates?

I took a quick stroll through Cabelas in Saskatoon this evening. Tons of ammo. Boxes, cases, cans, pails of ammo. Prices on target 12 ga were okay, as were 525 Federals. Seemed to have lots of reloading stuff, although I didn't check every brand for each item ever made in recorded history. No "ammo shortage" tonight, at least.

I was at a local Canadian Tire day before yesterday and picked up a 525 box of Federal Champion 22 for about $26. They got a shipment of it in about a week ago. They just didn't bother to put it out, so they had to get it for me from the back. So, 22 is still shipping. They had 22 blazer bulk boxes too. They were overstocked with 30-06, 300 WSM, 270, which they said were the most popular calibers around here.

The local Walmart, OTOH, has been out of 22 and 223 for months. Unfortunately the staff there doesn't have a clue if something is coming in or even what "22" is. They have difficulty unlocking the ammo cabinet - I have had to do it for them the 2 times I bought something there...and after taking their keys, going behind the counter, unlocking the cabinet, finding what I want and pulling it out, they had to call a pimply-faced 17 year old to carry it to the customer service desk so I could pay. There I had to explain to the clerk what it meant when the system said she had to "check FAC" (yup, they still haven't modernized that to "PAL").

The LGS says there is an ammo shortage, and particularly a powder shortage, but they keep getting ammo in too. They just don't know the timing nowadays.

This is all small-town stuff though, so you big-city types may have very different experiences and expectations.

Best Regards, Geraldo

Some supply is low.

But higher pricing is price gouging.

I am still pay the same price I did last fall. My supplier has not increased in price. Why have other stores?

I pay $260 for 1000 9mm
$450 for 1000 .45
$380 for 1000 Federal Tac. .223
$450 1600 norinco .223
525 .22 $24
All Tax In.

Our price is the same ... SINCE OCTOBER!!!!..... Why do other stores ALL Claim 'Our Landed Costs' ....our Supplier this....our supplier that. They are simply jacking prices because they can.

Of course they can, and they should. Would you rather have it work like in the Soviet Union, where the government set the price for everything and people had to lineup for hours to (maybe) get a scrap of food?

Here's a thought, instead of demonizing the businesses that have a vested interest in your continued patronage, why not blame the ones actually responsible for unsubstantiated prices: the government and central banks? Failing that, why don't you start an ammunition business and sell your inventory below what it costs you to bring it in?

Ah...The Old " Why don't you do it " retort. Classic.

Why would I sell below cost? I would sell at a low margin and not raise prices 'Just Because'

or I could horde Norinco ammo and hope to sell it for $1 a round. Oh Snap...wait. There is no shortage.

x2...nowhere near an ammo shortage at Cabela's Edmonton either. Lots of .22 ammo in their flyer this week. Too bad it's just all for regular price.

Just came back from a Road trip to Seattle 7 Aug, 2013.

.223 and all things AR looked to have stabilized quite a bit, however primers were an outrageous $45 per brick.

9mm and .22 were almost impossible to find and every store I went to had signs limiting purchasers to 1 50 round box per transaction.

Maybe production shifted from .22 and 9mm to .223... Perhaps the profit margins for .223 are better...

Ct and wall mart are all out of 22LR here 2 out of 3 gunstores have no boxes of 525 rounds. The one that does wants 30 bux a box. Local hardware store has 2 boxes on the shelf and they want 36 per box of 525 WTF ?!?!

Just bought a bunch, I see no sign of a shortage. The Sail in Etobicoke and the BassPro in Vaughan seem to have tons of all kinds of ammo. That's one advantage to Toronto, not a lot of competition for ammo! lol

Here in Meadow Lake,SK local co-op has al sorts of 22lr and a bunch of it is on sale so I don't see the shortage here. Also fully stocked on centerfire as well. They also are trying to get h4350 in for me here's hoping...

I'll probably be clearing out my local Walmarts when they get Win555s for $21 again. I bought all 9 bricks last time they had some. They seem to have a 2 month turnover.

Del Selin in Vernon bought smart and literally has several skids of .22 ammo. Also a really good selection/depth of most CF pistol/rifle ammo as well.

There is no ammo shortage, there is a glut of hoarding and fear mongering. Relax already, that will fix it, as suppliers are already producing record numbers of their products. Sheesh. This is a self fulfilling prophecy, based on herd behavioral patterns.
