Ammo storage

Princess Auto had a good deal on a set of ammo boxes of different sizes. I forget the brand, MTM or something like that.

Could have been Magnum, which is the brand for their plastic polymer containers. They had a multi-size 4-container one that goes on a carrying tray, and the price was pretty decent for all 4 when it was on sale. Think it contained a 50 cal, a 30 cal and a wider one, or something to that effect.

I don't recall seeing the MTM caseguard caliber-specific plastic boxes at Princess Auto. Those are fantastic for carrying loose ammo but there is limited capacities, and for the price and size, the bigger polymer or metal container is a better value if you want to keep the rounds in their original boxes or dump them all loose. And of course, the MTM stuff is caliber specific. I have some pricy rounds stored loose that way.

Make sure to give plenty of food and water so it grows up big and strong.

Joking aside, surplus ammo is stores in spam cans for decades. No airflow needed.

Yea I’ve seen they have four 30cal plastic boxes like I got now but with a carryier for 30$ or so, but yea I’m gonna keep my eyes open for when the metal ones go on sale and buy a few :) I’ll be keeping my ammo in the boxes they come in when bought from store

I bought several of 30 & 50 size at PA last Summer when they went on sale - $4.99 & 7.99. I just had to open another case if ChiSurp x39 and One spam can (720) of paper packs fits inside the 50 with a bit of extra space left over. One can in the 50cal weighs a hair under 30#.
And I have ALL MY AMMO in the plastic cans. Some I've had for 5+ years and NO probs with moisture. I have NO moisture probs in my basement AT ALL and a cheap Hygrometer says bsmt is 30-40% year round and between 12*Winter to 18* Summer.
I've given away all the metal cans I Used to have, the plastic ones stack just fine IMO and weigh next to nothing. I've got a couple of the larger square plastic boxes that I keep FA/Med supplies in. ex - Costco has 90% alcohol for ca $12/4pk 500ml, where Wally has 70% for about the same price. I buy most OTC meds, at Costco. Amazon has good deals on other Med supplies, too.

The metal ones are on sale at present.

^^ And the 50cal plastic one are the same price ,too. If you really have moisture probs the metal ones might be good, but I don't question the seals on the plastic ones. . . Unless you have 'flooding' chances.

Yeah, between the metal and plastic, if I can get metal one within a $1 of the plastic, I'd pick up the metal. The only thing is...I don't believe the metal ones have a way to lock it whereas the plastic ones have the lock loop (which I realize is hardly the super secure feature).

I got the plastic ones on sale last month for $7.99 each. The lady friend's son's girlfriend works at PA so she got me an additional 20% off that. Now that it's back to the normal price, I just picked up a couple of the metal ones...which is interesting for my safe because of how it drops flat on the back and front, it actually fits (barely) into my safe in that orientation whereas the plastic ones due to the protruding lip/edge, do not. The plastic ones function as a nice tackle box as well as a tool kit for the car.

I was able to pick up a 12 pack of steel ammo can locking studs from Marstar years ago at a reasonable price. The best deal I could find currently was at the big A store. $30 or so for 4 studs. Another set of 5 was $45 so take your pick.

On the plastic ones I drilled a hole in the corner of the 'lip' to accommodate the locks (didn't mess up the seal). Granted, not 'super secure' but that's not the point with locks and firearms. The point is " not easily accessible " - secure is a safe.

I have a healthy mix of metal cans and plastic ones from various makers. I gave up on uniformity years ago. Now I just buy what ever is on sale at the time I need more cans. I do miss the "heritage series" metal can combo pack of 30 and 50 cal cans from costco. I think it was $29.99 for the two.

I've replaced almost all of my plastic ammo cans with metal ones. Had the handle on a plastic Cabelas storage box pop off with 1000rds of 9mm in it. Luckily it missed my foot when it dropped, and only cracked (did not spill). I no longer trust the plastic boxes if they're any more than half full. The metal cans are bombproof, I have no worries with the 50 cal cans not handling the weight if filled right up with 9mm or 223.
Just looked now and Princess Auto has the steel 50cal boxes on sale for $17. I may have to drive over after work and grab a couple.

Did the same thing and had the same thought.

I dropped by Princess Auto today, and they still had a few 50 cal cans in stock. Was pleasantly surprised to see the cans on sale were brand new, not beat up surplus.

I likely will have to wait until I have some extra money, with me not working at the moment I have to conserve my money for a bit lol. But I’m definitely gonna grab one or two of them sometime when I’m in Owen sound or Kitchener next.
