Ammo Storage

Large bottom compartment on a Stanley rolling tool chest. Picked it up from Home Depot on sale for $60. The drawers hold most of my reloading supplies, a few gunsmith tools and my restricteds. Might need to get another as the handgun collection seems to be growing. New Cabelas opened today with a couple T/C Contenders......

I have a couple metal 4 drawer locking file cabinets. Work great! All the rimfire in one drawer, all the shotgun in another, reloading in another, etc. Easily holds numerous ammo cans and if you get the larger size drawers will take flats of 12 GA or crates of Czech surplus! As a bonus, most people would walk right past it and never bat an eye. Hidden in plain site! Keep your eyes open at garage sales & make sure it comes with keys!!!!

^^^ X2 here.. works perfectly, in fact I just picked up a second one. ;)

I bought a Bynford Job site box and I just crammed it full, its lockable, and in case of a fire I thought its thick enough it SHOULD keep cook off rounds inside.

My Misses did complain about my in home storage of ammo until a light bulb went off in my head, shazzam, now i store it in my new multi level locked and alarmed shed system, damn good idea. Not just yard mowin stuff

I just bought a 10 gun cabinet from cdn tire when it went on sale 50% off and use it for ammo storage. Also have a few mortar ammo cans which I found for $14 in perfect conditon and store 7.62 in it. The mortar cans are great and about 4x bigger then your regular sized ammo can

you can easily put a lock on them with a simple and cheap install of a Ubolt though the front lid. Makes transport to the range a breeze and legal as per our wonderful laws.

.

Since when do you have to lock up ammo on the way to the range?

You don't, same as you don't need to lock it up at home.

RCMP website "Store the ammunition separately or lock it up. It can be stored in the same locked container as the firearms."

I don't lock up my ammo, I lock the guns up.

Steel ammo cans .50, 7.62, 5.56, 40mm. Most are from Princess Auto you need to pick out the nice ones when they put out a new pallet and not buy the crushed rusted or dented ones.
i also have a few federal ammo cans that come with ammo.

for locking black plastic zip ties.

I really like this idea and am now looking for one for cheap.

Thanks,

Quote from a legal forum.
I have heard that there is an offence of “careless storage of ammunition”. Where is this offence defined in the Criminal Code? What is considered “careless storage” of ammunition?

Section 86 (1) of the Criminal Code provides as follows:

86. (1) Every person commits an offence who, without lawful excuse, uses, carries, handles, ships, transports or stores a firearm, a prohibited weapon, a restricted weapon, a prohibited device or any ammunition or prohibited ammunition in a careless manner or without reasonable precautions for the safety of other persons.

Storing ammunition in an orderly fashion and unlocked isn't careless.

Storing ammunition loose, rolling around your stovetop while you're cooking, is.

Nail meet head.

If ammo was required to be under lock and key, don't you think it would be sold in lockable containers?

look on kijiji, there was a free 4 drawer file cabinet on there not long ago. there are lots of cheap ones. locking ones are nice if you got kids or plan to have them, or even have kids that come to visit that may find there way into your stuff. if you can weld it is easy to add a bar the length of the cabinet to lock all the drawers. I can take pics of mine, if you want to see how it is done.
I use a four drawer vertical cabinet and a three drawer horizontal one for all my ammo storage.
plano 50cal boxes can be bought at le barons on merivale for about $9 each, a little larger than the metal ones but they don't rust.

I found a place online called "Sportman's Guide".

These guys have those MTM Ammo Cans for two at $25 (that's waaaay less than anyone else in the civilized world!).

These cans hold 1K of ammo easy, stack well, and double lockable (for the 'belt and suspender' crowd).

'Hope this helps ...

When I bought my proper gun safe, I put my ammo in my 16 gun stack on safe since I had it anyway. I also have 50 cal cans. Crated ammo you stack on each side of the bed, put a small tablecloth and a bedside lamp on it and voila, the missus is happy.
