Just picked up a R700 and I'm looking for anyone's advice on what ammo their rifle likes best. It's the .223 20" tactical version with a 9" twist, to save people from having to google it. I'm sure a few people have some idea for a jumping off point with this rifle. Thanks in advance everyone.

That's a hard call here because this forum is full of reloaders. The best ammo is the stuff you roll yourself.

A 1/9 twist is perfect for anything from 50gr bullets up to 70gr. I suggest buying a few boxes of 55gr or 60s to see what works in your gun, and for God sake, save your brass cause you never know when you'll want to take up reloading.

On a side note, bed the action. I started with the same rifle and the biggest improvement for accuracy was bedding. The factory stock is 1 notch above junk;), barely, but bedding will make it better.

Good luck

My .223 liked Sierra 69 gr Match kings. It really liked the 77 gr SMK. Also a 1:9 twist, the 77 "should not shoot well" in that twist, but it shot great, over 24.2 gr of Varget and small rifle primers. Factory ammo I tried was standard 55 gr AE .223, and the heavier (when you can find it) 62 gr Winchester is fantastic for a factory load.

hope this helps.

I think there is some factory ammo available that is loaded with the Hornady 75 BTHP bullet; that is probably pretty much the highest performance factory-loaded long range ammo you can get that'll shoot in a 1-9".

If this ammo shoots well for you at 100, you can reasonably expect it to shoot well for you out to at least 600yards or 600metres. It's not quite up to snuff for 1000 yards, but there's a good chance it might be OK at 800 yards.

Have not done extensive testing, but the 60gr Nosler BT and the 77gr SMK work great in my R700 Tactical, using R15.
