Hello,

Been occasionally shooting for about 1 year. I have a Savage Mark II .22LR (bought used $300)… loving it so far.
The previous owner commented the rifle seems to like Blazer 40gr.
So far I’ve tested :
Blazer 40gr : shoots very well between 25-50 yards (never tried shooting further yet)
SK rifle match (red box) : shoots very well between 25-50 yards (never tried shooting further yet)
CCi quiet-22 HP : does not shoot consistent groups at 25 yards
CCi 22 short : shoots horrible inconsistent groups at 25 yards

Question : what ammo do you recommend trying for :

Target paper at shooting range : 50 – 75 – 100 yards ?
Pest control on farmland at 25 yards (quiet ammo) : squirrels – groundhogs – raccoons ?
Where can your suggested ammo be ordered online ?

Thanks for any tips and advise… still new but loving the interest of shooting!

Mine seems to shoot everything well.. but really liked remington yellow jackets (hyper velocty) and cci standard. I've put a few boxes of rws (I think) through it that were really impressive. I know one of the dealers here sells a variety pack so you can try a few different ones.. but ill have to find the link.

mine likes anything copper washed. cci quiet segmented are amazing for pests.. just pisses off trash bandits though, bigger than a bread box, move up to standard/hyper velocity.

There was a wonderful reply on another thread about a different matter, but, essentially, you asking me what kind of ammunition your rifle likes best, is like me asking you what size shoes I should buy. Especially .22's are likely going to prefer one brand or weight over another - I might have a twin to your rifle, but no reason at all yours will like the same ammo as mine does. Buy a box of each kind that is available to you and try them - only your rifle can tell you what ammo it likes - it is different than most everyone else's. Within reason, very expensive stuff may shoot no better or even worse than cheap stuff - you have to shoot and find out.

Keep in mind that you do not have a multi-thousand dollar bench rest small bore target rifle. Those guys talk about 5 and 10 shot groups in the "teens" or less, and go to extraordinary lengths with their ammo, and their rifles actually can show a a couple thousandths or a couple hundredths of an inch in group size difference, as a result. What you have, and there are millions of them, are perfectly adequate to have years and years of good fun plinking at informal targets and small game - enjoy it for what it is!!! If you quit having fun with it, you are doing something wrong!!!

hands down top ammo at club benchrest shooting Midas +

I have multiple "target" 22's. I buy as many different types of ammo as possible. Try them all. Usually shooting multiple 5 shot groups with each brand. Just shooting one group after changing the ammo can give you differing results. Once you find what your gun really likes you can try buying 1000, 5000, 10000+ rounds of the same case lot. Hopefully you'll get the same results. I'm a cheap bugger so my goal is to find a $0.07/round that is almost as accurate as the more expensive stuff so that plinking is accurate but not expensive. And then keep the expensive stuff for match shooting.

I've found that the Savage MKII's that I've owned/shot are not as picky as others. They typically shoot a lot of ammo well, and a bunch of ammo really well. Not like you'll be guaranteed the same results but I've found that my current MKII shoots great with Aguila Rifle Match and BBM HV.

For target shooting where accuracy is the goal, use standard velocity (SV) .22LR ammo. CCI SV is probably the least expensive to start with. Try better SV ammo as you develop more consistency. SV ammo will not be as loud as high velocity (HV) ammo and will do better than "quiet" ammo for pesting.

Mine loves CCI Greentag as well. Winchester Dynapoint, American Eagle 40gr do pretty good to for what the cost and I was able to make looney sized groups @ 100m with Remington Yellow Jacket. I had a box of CCI Shoot’em that did good too.

Of course there is more expensive match ammo that will do better buy those 4 loads do very good at the distances you mentionned.

Sk Rifle Match and Standard +

Do you find a difference in any of the SK ammo ? Maybe at different distances ?
So far I've only tried SK Rifle Match (red box), but am curious if it's worth the money to try the other's.
I can only find 500 round boxes, would love to buy the 50 round boxes just to test.

Mine loves the CCI standard velocity. 1070fps

This. Mine routinely shoots better than 3/4" at 50, with the occasional half inch group.

Cci quiets suck in my gun, you'll get 3 good ones and two flyers in most groups.

My gun also doesn't like mini mags, they shoot fine but don't eject half the time. Winchester 333, 555, and wildcat all had the same issue with not always ejecting the empty case. Cocking the rifle and firing it on the already fired case usually works to get it ejected for some reason.

My MKII TR isn't picky when being feed the usual bulk ammo (Blazer, CCI, Eagle, Win555's) but it shoots consistently better with CCI SV ie. less flyers. Prob has a bit to do with ammo QC....
