ammonia for copper removal?

anyone tried ed's red?

i made a batch of ed's red today and it works really good. i also made a variation of ed's oil which is 50/50 automatic transmition fluid dextron 3, and k-1 kerosene, with the addition of 100 grams of hydrous lanolin per 2 litres of ed's oil, this stuff is really nice. It made 2 litres of high quality gun oil for $15, and 1 gallon of ed's red cleaning solvent for $17.

There you go. Ed's red and ammonia are what I use to clean my guns. I follow up with a spray lube - right now that happens to be G96.

I'm pretty sure it's Dexron 3 and anhydrous lanolin.

And why would you believe that? It does not remove copper fouling nor does it harm a brush... and it is not listed in the ingredients of Hoppes #9.

Hoppes #9 will remove copper. I have left my barrel wet with Hoppes overnight and pushed out a small amount of copper. It does not attack copper like ammonia does, but it will remove some.

I bought 1/2 a gallon of 26% Ammonia off a buddy who bought a jug of it from Zep.

Use this stuff in a WELL ventilated area as it will take your breath away if you get a nose full. And don't store it in a plastic bottle that is not designed to store it......don't ask me how I know this. :D

oh yeah, it works! i plugged the muzzle with an earplug then filled the barrel with a turkey baster thats seen more action in the past couple days... and let'er soak for 1/2 hour or so. when i pulled the plug the juice came out like blue respberry kool-aid! i followed with chunks of a nylon scrubber brush rammed back n forth through the bore. after a few repetitions it looks like a mirror in there.

Ammonia cleans copper so well that if the bore is corroded and is copper fouled, the crud is cleaned so well that the corrosion damage and pits show up extremely well. Rather than admit the bore had issues in the first place, some blame ammonia.

I have taken Lee enfields that would give a 15" group at 100 metres and given them an ammonia soak and clean. After the cleaning the group size dropped to 3" with the military sights. This was done at the range.

it is defenitely dexron...although i don't live in a trailer park i guess theres a little ricky in me. i bought the lanolin from the pharmacy, and you do need to ask for it at the dispensory. I thought it was hydrous lanolin but i was wrong. That was my f*&k-up, i misread the instructions. i have since added more to my oil because further reading suggested i could add as much as 1 pound anhydrous lanolin per gallon, so i up'd it to 250g per 2 litres of gun oil. if you wipe a patch of this through the bore and on all metal surfaces it will easily protect a gun from rust for 2 years or more
