Although the F.A. specifies a minimum standard for storage, its just that......a minimum. Depending on the circumstances - kids/others having access, frequency of break-ins in the area, etc, police may find you are not taking reasonable precaution for the safety of others and charge you under C.C. s86(1):
Careless use of firearm, etc.
86. (1) Every person commits an offence who, without lawful excuse, uses, carries, handles, ships, transports or stores a firearm, a prohibited weapon, a restricted weapon, a prohibited device or any ammunition or prohibited ammunition in a careless manner or without reasonable precautions for the safety of other persons.
Since I have kids and they have friends running in and out of the house, I keep my ammunition locked up either separately or together with my unloaded, trigger-locked firearms in my gun safe. I significantly exceed the minimum standard so there is no question as to reasonable precaution. I live in Ontario too.
I would expect that, in the province of Alberta, reasonable precaution would be meeting the minimum standard - you did something as opposed to nothing. Thats the way it should be. I don't think you have anything to worry about.
