I wasn't at all impressed with the 10/22 takedown and I've got a Remmington 597 in .22 wmr so I'd like something different. Dlask interests me but I want open or peep sights with an option for a scope later. Black tacticals are on the table but the main thing is accuracy out of the box. Aftermarket mags with 20 plus rounds might tip the scale between one or another. hehehe

Say up to $1500.

Sell me something. :)

Cheers

I was just looking at a 512 online but saw that the receiver was polymer and I thought that was weird.

The MSR has pop up sights. I could live with that.

Marlin 795 at 130 to 190 depending on when you buy is the best choice with open sights out of the box reliable too. IMHO.

I wasn't too happy with the finish of my last Marlin lever, but I'll probably be able to handle one of those locally. It might be too close to the Rem 597 though.

I had a look at the RI M22 but it was too small. I've got arms like an octopus.

put a want to buy ad for a thompson center r55 they are match accurate. discontinued a few years ago but can still be found.

Over the years I have owned at least 5 Ruger 1022s. 2 were heavy barrels. The rest were standard carbines in stainless and blue. None of them were close to accurate. Last one I had 6 months ago didn't feed some ammo either. My pal has the new takedown model and it is lousy in the accuracy department also. My new Marlin model 60 is great and less than half the price of a 1022 also. But my Savage heavy barrel is a tack driver with a lovely trigger for slightly more than a 1022 but a bolt action.

CZ 512s are wonderful guns. I have the WMR version and it is very accurate for a semi. The trigger from the factory is heavy but if you follow the trigger mod instructions that have been posted on Rimfire Central, you will get a very nice ~3.5 LB trigger.

I'm leaning towards the 512 but I'm wondering if I shouldn't save the wood and iron for a bolt action and just bite the bullet and go scope with the semi. I do plan on getting a bolt .22lr as well.

So the tactical types fall short in the accuracy dept? Even the MSR? Are they at least better than the 10/22 out of the box?

I'm not hunting. This is just for a 20 yard indoor range and the occasional trip out to a 100 m outdoor range.

Takedowns are rarely as accurate as fixed barrel models in any action. My 10/22 standard carbine shoots awesome. If I do my job it does it's job. Now I am 51 and irons are out now for me. I was shooting gophers this weekend and my closest kill was 60 yards and farthest was about 100. I am running a Redfield Battlezone Tac 22 scope with BDC turret designd for 36 gr bullets at 1280 fps. It works awesome. I dial it up and if I hold steady and do a clean trigger pull I am usually rewarded with a hit/kill shot. I don't care much for the trigger system on the rifle so a Timney will be added this spring.

A shooting buddy has one and dizzy is 100% right. The thing is crazy accurate and consistent even with cheap junk ammo. And when he shot it with match grade ammo it was a one hole cloverleaf pattern about the size of a dime at 50 yards. It's truly a rifle that deserves a top notch scope.

The magazine availability is almost zip though. He's been looking for another 10 round mag without luck. And there's just nothing around for after market high capacity options.

If your budget is $1500 and you MUST have the 25 round magazine option then you're a candidate for a Ruger 10-22 project build. Accuracy is easily dealt with by a replacement barrel from one of the after market companies as part of the build.

Or you can consider the Tactical Solutions X-Ring or Volquartsen pre-built rifles. In a weak moment I opted for the complete X-ring version with the cutout stock. For the amount I've shot it the rifle is truly amazing for both accuracy and having a lovely trigger that makes fast and accurate shooting easy. I'd suggest you match it up with a Nikon P223 1x4 scope for action style shooting or a Leupold with up around 12x max power for bench rest shooting.

Otherwise I'd suggest that you build up from scratch. Since the more insane/serious builds end up with only one or two pieces of Ruger origin I'd suggest you simply buy all after market stuff and build up what you want. If you're also wanting plain sights I'd go with a receiver that allows you to fit a long heavy section one piece picatinny rail that extends out over the barrel. Then you can alternately fit a scope equipped with a detachable base or AR style rail mount flip up sights yet maintain a fully free floated barrel.

Does any of this sound enticing?
