An epic sporting cartridge. The 7x57 mauser

In all actuality, the 7mm Mauser doesn't do anything that a whole list of similar cartidges will do for the majority deer hunter who will use it here in NA. It will come with a bit more "cool" and nostalgia, but is harder to find factory ammo for and won't fit into a SA.

Pretty much this, I wouldn't dump my 7mm-08 for a 7x57 but if someone wanted to give me one I'd be happy to take it off their hands. If I am building a 7mm that requires a long action and is pretty much a handloading only option I will make mine a .280 Remington, either original recipe or AI or a .270 Winchester(gasp).

Waiting to see pics of yours!
This is all I have for now.

I have a Brazilian Mauser model 1935 that I bought years ago. It is a beauty with the outrageously long bayonet and beautiful workmanship. Shoots paper punch type holes, perfectly round which is unusual to me as I don't have any other rifle that does that.

Nice! ...... Any more pics with a story? :)

I might like yours more than mine...

There's not much of a story, other than having read too much Bell and Corbett in my youth.

I have several Latin American Mausers from 1930 s etc.
most made by FN or Germany
that are all in 7 x 57 mm . abit beat up on outside but great bores and accurate and fun to shoot.
I think it is a Great cartridge.

I have 2 - 7x57 rifles. #1 is a M700 Classic, the other a M70 Featherweight.

Both are marvelous rifles. Very effective, and mild mannered to shoot and
hunt with. I have shot a number of moose, Elk, Black Bears and deer with mine,

Never felt undergunned with my 7x57's, even though I own heavier hitters.
Dave.

That must be a small might ! That’s a usable piece of art of which I’m sure you’re proud to own. I’d call it a tie :)

Being a nit-picky, ocd perfectionist, there are a few things I would do differently if I were doing it over. There were times when I thought I would never see it completed, and this one has effectively cured me of custom projects. I had it out on a trial run a few times when it was still in the white, with a throw-away stock. I had quite a lucky streak going with it for a while.

That is one nice rifle and much closer to the original than mine. The small details really make it, like the floorplate engraving, sling studs and the sights are very nice touches.

My first centerfire rifle was a tang-safety Ruger M77 in 7 x 57, more than four decades ago. Apart from introducing me to the art of handloading it was a faithful companion, responsible for coyotes, white tailed and mule deer, black bear, moose and my first (6x6) elk. Decades later, one of its companions (a KS Arms VZ 24 build) would accompany me to South Africa and cleanly take Kudu, Gemsbuck and Springbuck. A few weeks after returning to Canada it did a beautiful job on a 5x5 bull elk.
Easy to shoot well, awesomely effective.
Are there better cartridges? Sure there are. But having a 7x57 as your hunting rifle is like being accompanied by small arms history. Always up to the task. Understated, deadly.
What's not to like?

Took the KS Arms VZ 24 for a little outing to a friend's today. Punching paper and making holes in 1/2-inch soft steel plates. (Not what I expected!)

My "Holy Grail" rifle - a Brno ZG-47 carbine in 7x57, in its natural environment.

I have been looking high and low on the internet for a 7mm or an 8 mm Mauser and haven’t had any luck finding one I can buy. I show up on this forum for a few days and find people who have five or six of the things. Really nice guns guys. I’m hoping to track one down in the near future.

They do appear on the EE from time to time.

Welcome to CGN. :)

There are 3 listed on the EE...

I was fondling a 7x57 H&R Handi-Rifle at the Calgary Gun Show a few years back and regret not buying that rifle........:(
That is the only H&R in 7x57 I have ever seen, I don't think they made many of those in that classic chambering.
