An exciting waterfowl evening....

Had a great experience tonight…. I went over to visit with one of my farmer friends and she mentions to me that she had seen a hundred geese in the cut corn field yesterday late afternoon. So I decide to go home and get my gear, get back to the farm and setup. With the nice sunny warm weather (beautiful day) I figure the birds wouldn't arrive until sunset. With my setup all done (5 monster magnum decoys and about 10 normal size shells) just after 6pm it didn't take long before the first flock of 9 birds came straight in…. 3 shots and two geese down…. 10 minutes later is when it gets really interesting…..

A flock of mallards, maybe 40 birds start circling in and around the decoys, they come in wings open but at the last second veer off. I call they come back, same thing happens so we do this for the next 5 mins or so before I start to hear geese coming my way…. I see flock after flock coming toward me, they come in and try to land but the mallards circling over my decoys keep the geese just outside shooting range. This went on for 10 minutes, maybe 100 geese now and 40 mallards, circling trying to land, eventually some geese land but I don’t shoot them, keep waiting for the big flock to commit…. I was like a deer in the headlights, not knowing what to do with so many birds flying…. Eventually they left and I was caught holding my gun in my hand, big smile on my face for the experience but a little disappointed I didn't fire a single shot….

A few minutes go by and the honking sound is gone, all is quiet, then without any warning a dozen or so mallards return and I decide to take a shot as they fly pass and down one goes… Then it went dead for the night.....
So all in all, 4 shots taken and 3 birds down…..
Gotta love this time of year… :)

Those are the best hunts! I love playing the waiting game when they are buzzing over head or they land just outside of reach with more coming in. Such an adrenaline rush!

I had a similar situation happen last time I was out. I was in the layout blind in a field I had saw 100+ geese in the evening before so I waited. They started coming in and landing just out of reach, so I let them stay and keep calling in the rest for me, much less work. Eventually they ended up walking right over within about 15 ft of my blind and I decided it was time. I have a video on my phone that I should upload (I was using it to see out of my blind because there were so many geese in the field I was afraid to poke the tiniest bit of my head out).

Edit: Here's the video (sorry for crappy portrait mode, as stated above I was using it as a mirror more than a recording device)

Great job Fratri but you really should come experience SK at least once. That would have been flock after flock joining up with hundreds and hundreds of ducks and geese joining in the merry go round and singles, pairs and small groups doing non stop touch and go practice landings. Its a site to behold when you have geese and ducks descend upon you from every direction by the thousands, not to mention deafening. Nothing makes more noise than huge flocks of lesser canadas and snows.

Empty skies?

Not for long!!

Any time there are geese in the bag it has been a good hunt, yes?
Always fun to read about hunting in the Prairies especially when I'm in BC thanks the spank.
I remember watching thousands of geese pouring out and over all the fields around us and when they wanted to drop in they would fall from the sky flipping upside down and back again dropping in for a vertical landing.
fratri, keep us apprised of your success.
Best Regards,
Rob
