Over on the FAL Files there is a tread about an L1A1 in Canada. Now I kind of but not really understand the Prohibited and Restricted thing up there in Canada. It sound like if your got the right paperwork you can have one locked away in a safe with the trigger lock on it. In one of the replies someone atated that even with the proper paperwork it still "can not be shot at any range". Can someone explain what the deal is?

The L1A1 is prohibited.. You can own one if you owned one (or another in it's prohib class when the OIC was set) basically if you are grandfathered...

As is stands right now.. Prohibs cannot be taken to the range with special authorization and getting that sounds difficult.. Someone with 12.3 (I think is the class) can weigh in...

"...if you got the right paperwork..." At the right time. Prior to December 1, 1998. Even if you had registered a rifle that was declared prohibited by our stupid Firearms Act, you had to re-register it before December 31, 2002. All registrations between '98 and '02 were declared void as of that date. No more ownership permits are being issued. No permits to shoot 'em either. Instant 'safe queens' with a corresponding drop in value.
Think Class 3 without ever being allowed to get one, no matter what State you live in.

You can always hide in your gun room, pull back the cocking handle, close your eyes and yell Bang while pressing the trigger. I know it's not the same but it still beats drooling at some FN/L1A1 pictures on the net.

Some of us can only have the pictures until they ban then too...

So, let me get this straight. You can own AND shoot a M14 copy but you can't own or shoot a FAL. Oh, how silly of me. I know, my problem is I am thinking logically. My first boss told me that would get me into trouble.

there's a whole list things you CAN'T own- for instance, the REAL m14 is prohibited( h&r, trw, springfield armory, winchester) and you may only have one if you're grandfathered - however, the m1a, norinco/poly m14s/305, lrb, smith and a few others are non-restricted- just like your ordinary hunting rifle- the act is a confusion of california laws, somebody's idea of waht we shouldn't have, the assault weapons ban, and a look at the gun digest for 92 for good measure- anything with anything hanging down or funny looking was prohibited- unless there was enough in the population to change that- ie the mini 14, even though that was the gun that started the current mess- they were going to prohibit the ar15, but somebody pointed out it was used in service rifle competitions, so they neutered it instead

Ya, logic is in short supply in politics. :\ You are totally right though about the silliness.
