This is a little off-topic but I figured this forum might be the one most likely frequented by those who might have known him.
James E. Leeper, of Calgary, Alberta, passed away this morning, of natural causes, at the age of 94. He was a long time competitive shooter, a handloader and experimenter, and an ethical hunter. He was also my Dad.
Jim earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Idaho. He worked in the petrochemical/ oil and gas industry for over fifty years. He was involved in projects in Canada, the US, France, the UK, Algeria, Iraq, Iran, Jordan and probably some other places I have forgotten.
Jim inherited his interest in rifles and shooting from his father and shot in competition from the time he was in high school. He started shooting benchrest competitions in the early 1970's and started shooting "F" class in the '90's. He did some of his own gunsmithing and swaged his own bullets. He introduced me to reloading over sixty years ago. We spent many hours shooting and hunting together and his encouragement undoubtedly influenced me to start gunsmithing and to join him in his hobby when I could.
We competed together at the old Namaka BR range and at the Homestead range near Calgary. His interest in rifles and shooting continued throughout his life though he was unable to shoot anymore through the last three years. I know he missed being able to spend time at the range and missed the men he knew there. I like to think his last thoughts were of a great day at the range and that recollection will be with him forever. Regards, Bill
