I recently started loading as well.

It took me 6 hours to load 37 .223 rounds but I got them loaded! (and shot).

I then primed 50 .45 ACP cartridges but didn't bell them properly so when I seated the bullets the cases and bullets were ruined.

Other then my little .45 setback I am enjoying the hobby as I get to sit alone for a while for some quiet time (something I dont get to do very often)

Even though my hunting rig is out of commision until I get back my Howa bolt, I decided to run my shells through the resizing die and prime them all. Found out the hard way that you don't use too much lube! I dented 6 of them out of about 80. Oh well, brass is cheap right? Next step is to make up batches of 5 rounds starting at a low load and working my way up. Hopefully, that bolt comes back quicker than I expect!

my biggest mistake:redface: was the first batch of reloads,as soon as i saw the primmer fall out..
i thought i was finished with the stroke..with what reminds me..
i have to pull the bullets on them someday
Dented shoulders from too much lube do not mean you ruined the cases. Most times they are quite safe to shoot.
see there we go:D a new lesson learned every day

I have been rolling my own for 2 years now so I am not a old hand at it yet but not a newbie either. I #### up all the time. Have about 60 shells that needs the bullets pulled, yet all of them f-ups!
I like it almost as much as hunting!

Even those of us who have been "rolling our own" for a fair bit learn something new on a regular basis as well.

In this lesson I learned that the Forster collet type bullet pullers will not work with the WSM cartridges.

I lost a couple cases to crushed shoulder before I realized the short-fat cases will not fit inside the Forster puller. ;)

Icon, you do know that those cases aren't wrecked, right? Load normally and shoot. Those dents will be gone, like magic.

Hi,
I am new too in reloading.
Yesterday I was trying to reload .270 cal.
I crushed 6 brass shoulders when I put the bullet...and I stopped.
What is the problem???I don't know...
Bad dies?I bought it used here.
I have no problem when I reload .308...Very accurate.

Thanks

You are pushing the case back with he crimper built into the seating die. You probably got lucky with your 308 dies in that the lock ring was set properly by accident.

To set up your seating die place an empty, trimmed case in the shell holder and raise the press ram. Take your seating die and back out the seating stem as far as it will go. Now with the case in place on the fully raised ram slowly screw in the seating die until you feel the crimper make contact with the case mouth. Now for the important part - back out the die one full turn and set the lock ring down tight to the press. Your die is now set to seat bullets without crimping.

One thought to the guys who are crunching the shoulders of their cases, try to not get any lube on the shoulder or outside neck of the case.
Some people lube the inside neck but I never have, I just tumble it and then give it a quick scrub with the case neck brush.
Even still, it seems like some brass (read: cheap) is more susceptible to crushing than others.

I've been doing it for a few years now, but here's my (latest) screwup that needs help -do not overtighten the little brass set screw that holds the locking ring on an RCBS die. It's very soft and easy to strip. One of mine is now hopelessly stripped. I know RCBS offers replacements, but how do I get the stripped one out, short of drilling it (which I'm reluctant to do)?

Oh, and if you use walnut shell media for tumbling and you buy gerbil cage powder as replacement, make sure you don't get the stuff with pieces that fit perfectly in a primer pocket... ;)

I find that the lee lube and lee dies work ok, and no crushed sholders, but in the rcbs dies I have, that don't have a hole in the side of the die where the sholder is, it likes to crush the sholders if I don't clean the die out every 30rds or so. I have sized 400 30-06 in a row with little care in where the lube whent with a lee die, no crushed sholders.

I have never see a set of RCBC dies without a vent hole. What cartridges are the dies for that don't have a vent?

I have never heard of cleaning out the dies. How do you do that and with what? Do all Dies need to have this done?

a few months back....i took all my dies apart to clean.... water and soap worked great....
i think its the case case lube that gunks up every thing

Doing fine with 9mm. Started out a little long but have since fixed that.

We are having crushed cases with 30 carbine but with the info here I should be able to fix it.
