(Or how I spent 6 hours making something that only costs $100)

Doesn't look like much, does it?

and one of these

drilling the old fashioned way- no DRO or CNC (or what 2 hours of work looks like)
IMG00028-20100823-0127.jpg

a little bit more sawing

It seems to fit in one of these.

tune in next time, for "how I'll spend 6 hours making $50 of picatinny rails."

That is cool. Congratulations on having the skill and equipment to be able to do something like that.

I love making stuff that I could buy. But mine usually ends up costing more in materials than the boughten item would have set me back!

I'm seeing that with an induction generator I'm trying to build. Will have probably been cheaper to buy a 1200w genset on sale at hd.

Keeps my mind from wandering, so who cares

I would pass of getting it powder coated, try liquid paint instead.

I gave that some thought as well. I don't want to try ano because I need some sort of coating that a- doesn't cost alot and b- covers up the marring from my brass steady rest fingers.

I may have to bite the bullet and make up a bullnose center for my tailstock, so I can turn the OD of the tube down.

A decent powder coating will require about 3mils of coverage, this may or may not impede tight tolerances. Also for paint if this part gets hot, maybe try a cheap flat black liquid spray on bbq paint. It will look half decent, go on easily and be able to resist the heat.

You can get cerramic coating paints, plus powder coating isn't that bad depending on were you are, ask around and if you find someone interested they may do it for free. The CT rattle can bbq paint does work too, I've used it on paintball stuff.

I spent months building a gingery style lathe. In the end it worked out to be about the same size as a lathe from busy bee for about 1000 bucks. If I had worked extra hours instead could have payed for the lathe in a couple weeks. But that is way to easy and one of the reasons why we build rather then buy. Plus its the time doing that we enjoy.

Nice job on the free floating shroud, please post how your gonna make the weaver rails very interested in seeing that, have a project in mind to build an mbr style shroud for my m14. Have a good one.

Dave

Generic powder coatings wont be able to take high heat and will degrade/ smoke/ discolour over time. The major problem with them is that they are applied to thick compared to liquid coatings with the resultant issues with fit and tolerances of joining parts effected.
