Anneal Before Or After Resizing?

Been reloading 7.5x54 French for a while and I find the PRVI brass to be a little too thin for good neck tension. I'd prefer not to crimp the necks.

Decided to go with 30-06 brass as a substitute. As seen in the pic, the resize puts the shoulder of the 7.5 well down on the body of the 30-06 case:

Question is, should the cases be annealed before or after resizing and trimming?

Thanks in advance

You can polish the expander to get more neck tension, using 30-06 brass means neck turning. If you do not neck turn you will end up with a tapered neck and neck clearance problems. On top of this the base diameter of the 7.5x54 is .482 and the 30-06 is .470 meaning .012 smaller in diameter and not a good choice for a substitute case.

What make and type die are you using that doesn't give you enough neck tension with your Prvi brass.

I'm using RCBS FL die.

Got 20 cases annealed, resized and trimmed today and the rims fit fairly snug on the extractor and extraction seems positive enough. I was going to make a few dummy rounds to check for neck clearance and start out with mild loads and light bullets.

Thanks, Ed - much appreciated

Below a new RCBS expander, its amazing what a closeup macro lens can do for old tired eyes.

Now break out the crocus cloth, .001 to .002 smaller than bullet diameter is normal. But depending on your brass spring back you may need to go smaller in diameter.

FYI Whidden custom dies sell a expander kit for adjusting neck tension. (so you can see how much the expanders effect neck tension) ;)

"The Whidden Gunworks Expander Balls typically allow the shooter the opportunity to adjust the neck tension from .001″ to .005″. The Expander Ball Kit comes with five Expander Balls. Each kit includes an Expander of the chosen caliber and decreases in size by .001″. Example: If an Expander Ball Kit for .243 caliber is ordered, the kit would include Expander Ball sizes .243, .242, .241, .240 and .239."

So don't worry, I won't tell anyone your playing with your balls.

Ha!

Neck clearance seems to be a go with the resized -06 cases.

I'll probably grab a set of those expanders as well. Thanks for your help, Ed.
