i was on youtube and seen a video of a guy that had a machine for annealing his brass. i am wondering if this is a machine that can be purchased or do you need to build it yourself. any info about the machine would be greatly appreciated.

I could be wrong here, but I though that brass has to be quickly cooled (dropped in water) to anneal it properly (Opposite of steel annealing).

Air cooling would harden the brass.

That is not the case. The quench after annealing is to prevent heat from getting to the case head and softening it. I think the holder of the annealing machine acts as a heat sink which prevents the case head from getting hot.

Yep, you're wrong. Annealing of brass (as with most metals and alloys) has nothing to do with cooling rate, it is entirely dependent on time at elevated temperature.

I spent some time brainstorming ideas for annealing machines and making some drawings of designs I considered building. In the end, I didn't.
