Anodizing Recievers

Anodizing can be done at home.

Look at all the fancy pretty paintball guns. Splashes - 3 colour fades. etc.
Dye and some current is all you need.

If you want to anodize some aluminum, checkout a paintball forum. Better chance of getting real info there

Not true Mil spec Hard anodizing, not even non mil spec hard anodizing,
The stuff you see on paintball gun is hot type 1 anodizing, its crap at best.
Allso to be noted true mil spec hard anodizing has no Dye in it.
so anything other then the natrual shades Hard anodizing comes in dark gray to black, is not true mil spec hard anodizing.
And yes we have done our own Mil Spec hard anodizing at S&J hardware, its alot of work and time if you do not do it for a living.
Which is why we have the sub contractor for Savage Arms so the work for us.

As mentioned, basic anodizing can be done at home very easily. Hard coat or Mil-Spec hard coat is not a DIY job.

This treatment is for aluminum only!

Thanks, Tips! Glad you cleared that up. Problem is anodizing can be used for metals materials other than aluminum.

That is actually wrong. I was a processing buyer for a couple years where the F-18 and V-22 landing gear are made, i was able to learn a tad about processing.

MIL-STD-171, 7.5.1 calls out Hard anodic coating on aluminum, MIL-A-8625*, Hard Coat Anodizing, Class 1 - thickness 0.002” ± 0.0002” unless otherwise specified, nondyed

MIL-STD-171, 7.5.2 calls out Hard anodic coating on aluminum, MIL-A-8625*, Hard Coat Anodizing, Class 2 - thickness 0.002” ± 0.0002” unless otherwise specified, dyed, color to be specified. - this is the spec Colt Canada uses. I know this as one of our clients does their anodizing.

Buy some duracoat. You can go to A'stan with that and it's CHEAP. I liked the 1K line though.

My understanding is that - anodization colour is not an exact science. There are lots of trials and errors before a correct colour is obtained.

With sulfuric anodizie it is not hard to get a uniform color. Hard Anodize can be a little more difficult but most of the mil specs call out a color range.

Didn't know he wanted Mil-spec Ano.

Yeah, paintball ano isn't the greatest. But it would last for a range gun and look pretty sweet.

Do the Rail and upper in a Silver to Blue fade with a reverse Splash. That would raise a few eyebrows!!

Wicked_Police's red lower actually started off as a black one, it had already gone through the ano process before we realized it was supposed to be red along with Westicle's The strip and re-ano didn't affect any tolerances that I could find upon measuring it, though there was a slight color variation in the rear of it.

That being said, I have talked to our ano guy about doing FDE, and he thinks it can be done but would cost around $1k to set up for it, so unless there's a lot of potential FDE lowers getting sold it's a bit tough to suck up that cost

Wow. I sent Rick a pm or two, and an e-mail right after I got my lowers along with pictures asking about why the red wasn't even(looks like the black underneath is showing through) on the mag well and at the front near the take-down pin and where the receiver extension threads in, along with what looked like white scrapes that cannot be rubbed off on the bottom of the trigger guard. Neither the pm's or the e-mail got a reply.

I get more info by chance in a thread on this site.

Rick knew how important the red lower was to me, yet didn't feel the need to reply to my message.

I got my LTR from Rick, and was very happy with the gun and service. So when he offered the first run of lowers along with custom colors and engraving, I jumped at it to get a couple done, with the red one being very important. But because of the service after I got my lowers, I won't be dealing with Rick or ATR again.


My other lower is a tan one, pretty close to Magpul's FDE. I'm very happy with that one. The color is great. My 10.3" upper fits a little tight on it, but I don't mind, it looks terrific and works just like it should.
It was done with cerokote though(after anodizing black).

So while I have no desire to do any business there, a lot of other people are extremely happy with the service. And because of how my tan lower turned out, you'd probably be happy with the results as well(if you decide to go that route).

I was thinking about going this route, since my colt upper is grey, and my sabre defence lower is black. I like how it looks, but I'd prefer if they matched.

I am very concerned that you are unhappy with the service you received from Alberta Tactical.

I NEVER ignore anyone, especially a good client. I always try to return emails or PMs promptly. I have a feeling that your message may hav gotten lost in the chaos of our recent location move. We had to make alot of changes , things like email addresses , phone numbers almost all were changed and during the transition, you may have fallen through the cracks.
If this is the case my apologies.

In any event, I'd like to make things right with you.
Please return the lower, we will replace it with a new one at no cost.

My apologies for the mix up in making that 1 black first then having to strip it. The info I got was that it would not effect anything. Apparently the stripping process was not as complete as I was led to believe.

We will also do the custom engraving as well and the new lower will retain the serial number of the current one so that nothing changes from your point of view.
