Another 45-70 thread - 350 grain Hornady flavor

Ive got some Hornady 350 gr. JRN's on the way......anybody here shooting these ? The only powders I have for this application is 3031 and 4064 (or that I can find data for).....It is worthwhile working with them or should I move to something faster. Im loading for a Bolt Action No.4 Mk1 by the way.

3031 works perfect.
 
Just slow them down to about 1700 fps. Then you have a killer round without the thump.

Hope you saved your Leverevolution brass. It is about 1/4 inch shorter than standard and you need that to chamber the round.

Personally, I moved on and am loading a 425 gr cast bullet at about 1400 fps. Plenty fast and it will kill anything it touches.

thanks, I dont' feel the need to move them at 2000 fps - just trying to roll blackies in the bush @ 20-40 yards :cool:

Cant buy Factory ammo locally so I picked up some dies seeing as I reload for everyelse I own......so I only have RP and WW brass. Ill load to same OAL as the remington 405gr. factory stuff as that lenght seems to feed well.
 
The short brass (Hornady) is for the new FTX bullets. The old/regular ones work perfectly at the standard length brass.

Re7 works really well with those bullets. You can work up some 'hefty' loads which should be fine with your Enfield action.

I shot a lot of these Hornady 350gr, until I got into cast boolits. Now they just sit on the shelf. IMR 3031, or IMR 4198 would be my choice, but I am shooting milder stuff out of a rolling block.
 
I am having great success with AA5744. I load both cast and jktd with 300, 340, 405 450 and 500. Alway have unburnt powder remaining at case mouth and was quite concerned until I discovered it was characteristic and common for 5744....

I think it would probably been ok but I ended up using the expander (must be there for a reason)......I dont' have too many cases to crumple right now.

From my first experience with 3031 today it looks like Ill be using the Marlin 1895 loads from Hornady (starting). Following the Lyman 48th Data I had decided to use a starting load for level 3 (Ruger no.1/ bolt action rifles) which was 49 gr. of 3031 with a 350gr. bullet...first shot and the case fell in love with the chamber and needed a little coaxing to extract.....back to the drawing board here. I was a little disapointed because I didnt' see that as a very stiff load and the recoil was fairly mild even with the brass buttplate....oh well Ill test from 45gr. and check velocity this time .

At this time I'd be more than happy just to find a source for 350 Hornady bullets as my supply is drying up slowly.
With respect to loads, my 45-70 shoots well with that bullet and H322 powder.
 
In my Marlin 1895GS I have a selection of cast bullets and loads I use but for jacketed my two favorites are the Remington 405gr and Speer 400gr FN. Either of those in combination with IMR 4198 have given me my best results. IMR 3031 works well also but not quite as good as IMR 4198. Next, with either of the same two powders the Hornady 350gr FP interlock isn't shabby either. I haven't tried the Hornady 350gr RN and they're probably alright in a tubular magazine but I've sort of shied away from the use of them in that. For something else to play with I've picked up a bag of Remington 300gr SJHP's. I haven't tried them yet but they do look vicious.

Using the 350 grain Hornady Interlock and IMR 3031, in my FN K98 Mauser, I once won a small local gathering, w/iron sights, rifle competition.
This rifle is chambered in .458 x 2 inch American, & I can put 55.0 grains of IMR 3031 in this wildcat case. I myself, found the high end velocity
IMR 4198 handloads, just recoiled a bit too too much.
