My new to me Arisaka type 99 just arrived in the mail today. I bought it from the EE, a restored sporter, already have a type 38 so i had to get a type 99 as well:d
The fellow nutz from who i bought it did a very good job putting it back to original condition. Its an early production with the chrome plated bore, anti aicraft sight and and mono pod wich is missing on the rifle. At some point, bubba put some black paint on the trigger guard and upper tang but after disassembling the rifle,i removed the paint with paint stripper and very fine steel wool. The type 99 feel very well in hands, light and shoulder fast. The chrome bore is very good and the overall quality is also very good with a smooth action. Now i am wondering if i get a monopod(repro or original) or if i leave the rifle without.

painted parts by bubba when the rifle was sporterized(not by the seller)

Look great now without the ugly paint.

Type 38 and the type 99 make a nice team.

same here ,how do they shoot,it would be another caliber that i would have to reload for since ammo isnt readily available for this rifle but a rifle that belongs in an ww11 collection to say the least

Neat old rifle! I have an old beater Type 38. Years ago, when my girls were in high school, they brought home a Japanese exchange student. I asked her if she would like to see my firearms. I showed her this old rifle. "Oh! That's a Type 38." Jeez, I was surprised to find that she knew her firearms. I asked her if she had an interest in firearms, given that she knew the model of this rifle. "No! It is written right here!", and she pointed to where it said Type 38 in Japanese. :HR:

The rifles with ground crests seem to pop up fairly often at gun shows. Not as desirable as a mummed rifle but that just makes it more shootable IMHO.

They are surprisingly nice to shoot. The stock design seems to be very ergonomic for mid size shooters and recoil on the 99s isn't any more noticeable than on the 38s. That doesn't include the carbines though.

I see your rifle doesn't have a chrome lined bore. Not a big deal. I like mine a lot and with hand loads it shoots .312 diameter bullets very well.

Its chrome lined, my camera shot is bad but its chrome lined,as the bolt face too.

I've purchased a 38 and 99 on gunbroker and they were well worth the extra money to bring em up here. Accurate and interesting rifles. Both easy to reload. Now looking for the cavalry carbine and some day - the paratrooper model.

The Type 99 really is a cool rifle. I finally had a chance a few weeks ago to clean up my Grandpa's old war souvenir that he gave me a few years ago and take it to the range. Recoil is surprisingly mild, and I was using Norma 173 grain, or thereabouts - it was whatever Ellwood Epps had on their shelves that had been sitting there 11 years! I found dies at Wholesale Sports and another CGN'er pointed me to TradeEx for brass.

One thing I appreciate is the aperture rear sight - much nicer than normal open sights and I was able to get a decent (for me) grouping. I have a shooter grade Mosin that I think I'll make an aperture style piece for its rear sight like this one. Even after being in less than ideal storage at my Grandpa's for so long it had a nice shiny chrome bore and the majority of the rust was on the butt plate which cleaned up ok. Ground mum, not a collector grade piece, but a good shooter and now functional piece of family history. I just should have had the bayonet on it that day at the range :d
