Made our annual trip up north and my son managed to harvest another big buck. The buck was in hard core rut, sight at 500 yards along a bush line and it came in on a string at 40 yards. One bullet to the neck dropped the buck instantly and humanly. A couple of evenings later the buck was scored at 178 B&C gross. I passed up many bucks and waited for the minimum 160 B&C but never did see one, therefore my tag remained in my pocket. Both of us harvested a trophy buck each this year and quite content with that alone.

Whereabouts 'North' did you go? Just roughly, for curiosity's sake.

Slave Lake, Alberta. Tough hunting this year with many mature bucks that were winter killed. So far the snow is not as bad as last year, but winter has not officially begun but I hope the best for those critters. Saw many bucks in the 140's and 150's that will look good for next year, pending on old man winter.

The body was a little on the small size and he also had a short muzzle. My son was 22 km away from me because I was after another potential big boy, therefore he had loaded up the buck himself in the box of the pick-up. I'd say that the buck was only 200 pounds on the hoof.
 
Congrats on the successful hunt, that's a good buck. I've hunted slave lake all my life and have put a few on the wall over the years. This year was really slow never seen anything bigger then 150ish and more 130-140s, I did get my moose though which seemed plentiful where I hunted.

My second question was going to be how big your son is, I thought it was a smaller bodied deer with a good rack. I got a guy I teach at school who is a big boy, I would say over 300 lbs. He wears a size 16 shoe and would make 300 lbs. deer look like that picture, but around here you don’t see many antlers like that. I had a deer one year that was 165 lbs. hanging at the butcher that had a rack bigger than any other deer I got. That rack sure looked small on that deer compared to other deer I have taken with smaller racks.

I guess that some guys can make a small bucks body look smaller. I remember about 4 or 5 years ago he shot another buck that had a short body and muzzle which was similar to this years buck. Four years ago he weighed 200 pounds, now he is about 225 pounds, 6 foot tall as well. Both racks have only a 2 inch difference in size...... 176 and 178 gross B&C.

My son and I are devoted and passionate to hunt big mature bucks and grateful that we can. Your right about the time, it is the first thing that a hunter needs to hunt a mature buck. Secondly, location is next on the list. Sure there are "some" great bucks (whitetails) harvested in southern Alberta, however central and northern Alberta have bigger bucks and more of them. We live in southern Alberta and don't have any idea of what bucks there are in our northern location, therefore we inquire with local land owners, Game Wardens, County Constables, bus drivers, grader operators and local hunters of sightings of big bucks........trust me, this is not work but the labor of love. This year like many years of hunting big bucks I did not fill my whitetail tags (Alberta and Saskatchewan) because I did not see any buck with a minimum of 160 B&C, however many 150's I passed up that have potential next year to grow beyond our 160 B&C minimum. We have harvested many mature bucks and it appears that you have an interest in them, therefore here is one I harvested last year that grossed 192 B&C.
