Another BCL-102 Review

Oh I defiantly could've bought a MH whit the money I dropped on my 102... lol... Imagine if they sold the uppers on lowers for 3-400 $ Youd be able to build something better than a MH for cheaper...lol...

I just dont have the patience to wait on NEA to get stripped receivers sets out in a timely matter... lol...

you got to think bcl & atrs are selling these as complete rifles to ensure they stay non-restricted...... yes we all know there are versions of other rifles that flirt between nr and restricted (xcr being the most comparable due to ease of barrel swaps), but for these new to market rifles i would hazard a guess you won't see bcl stripped upper/lower combos for a few years. (and never for the mh)

the real benefit of the bcl102 is the compatibility of parts.....

i am curious if the trigger was installed correctly, the legs of the hammer spring should be on top of the trigger pin in a groove that prevents walking.....

I'd be willing to bet that the pin was installed backwards, reverse the pin and it should hold. Same thing kept happening to my highspeed national match, e-mailed them adn they told me to check the pin, flipped it and its never walked again.

NR ar10 for under 2k! We should be jumping up and down in total joy!

I'm glad they're here, however I'm not going to be in a rush to get bent over to pay for it, especially when I'd be ditching half the parts.

I'll wait until I can get and upper and lower separately and build it the way I want it. That's half the fun of owning something in the AR family.

Gun looks great, BC6, glad you're enjoying it! Love the MOE Fixed and SLR Helix ;)

How do you like the mini-comp? Mine is sitting at home waiting to go on, wondering if I'm gonna like vs the factory and Lantac Dragon.

and milking every cent in profit they can :), This is the biggest cash cow in Canadian history... :) I would do the same in that situation so I cant fault them...lol... Waiting for the IOP is the only way around it.

Thanks! Pretty much a carbon copy of yours... Haha. I like that it's shorter and half the weight of the old brake. Haven't shot it yet but taking it out this weekend. I'll let you know

Ill be in the bush hunting with a AR10. doesn't get cooler than that :)

Oh, I dunno. I used to routinely hunt deer with my AI AR10 (and FN C1A1) back in the late 1980s and early 90s. Hunting with real Battle Rifles was pretty nifty. You young felas don't have exclusive rights to cool, despite what you may think....

Ouch, That hurts :) I can only imagine how cool that would've been. :)

Ya,lot of them young fellers, need their heads rammed up their Arses...
I bet you could do it for em too..:):)

Hmmm....if I bought an M305 for $600-700, I'd expect some assembly problems and to have to do a bit of tweaking. On an $1800 rifle, I would not. I'm still interested in the BCL-102, but reviews like this aren't prompting me to be in a hurry to get one. Thanks to the OP.... [and yes, I get that some people have had no problems and are entirely satisfied with their purchases...]

In terms of value, the first AR308 I bought was a DPMS LR308 at $1500. This was 10 years ago, however the price didn’t change much until a few years ago when the gii model took over. The dpms first gen has a 24” stainless barrel (bought as s target rifle), a slick upper so no forward assist or dust cover, a simple tube for end, a2 furniture and a crappy milspec trigger. So $200 to upgrade to a RR NM trigger. It’s restricted.

Today the Gii version is fancier, has a decent trigger, forged upper/lower, dust cover etc but a crappy for end and basic furniture. It’s about 2k and add another $200 or so for a new hand guard. It’s still restricted.

Others have already done a price comparison to the MH which starts st $3650 for the base model with DPMS A2 furniture. Ambi, threaded, cerekoted and threaded barrel is extra. This includes a standard DPMS basic forend. Anything else is extra. A MH done up the way I would want is over 5K.

So we have a BCL 102 at $1750 that requires a new trigger so $200 starting for a good one and of course you can spend more or less. Handguard is Mlok with quick release point (that will now actually work), it has a dust cover, will have ambi controls including right side bolt release, has a decent enough looking muzzle brake, barrel is threaded, fluted and cerakoted and it’s non restricted.

The only thing I plan on changing is the trigger or lightly modding it, pistol grip and stock. The rest I plan on keeping as is. I think it’s pretty good value. Providing of course that those components are decent. If there any issues, well I found a good barrel for $300 and $200 for a new decent BCG. Not optimal but still a heck of a lot cheaper than it’s closest competitor and frankly competitive in stock form with the restricted options. So no non restricted tax for a change.

Op thanks for the quick review. One of the problems is the 18.5” barrel. I suspect if the barrel was 20” we would have a lot less issues getting high end performance using match grade ammo. In many cases you might be just off the accuracy node as most match ammo is geared for hitting that node FPS with a 20-26” barrel. The printed FPS is 2650 out of a 26” barrel. Fortunately there is a decent rang to hit the accuracy node and some barrels give higher FPS than others.

Now I know there is an accuracy experiment going on but I think they missed the mark. The US military along with Federal gold has already spent millions doing the work for us. The three powder choices universally known for use in these types of rifles are 1) 4064 2) varget 3) RL15. I prefer varget but would use 4064 as well. No need to guess which powders for these rifles. Bullets 168, 175 smk. Amax etc are also good choices.

I’ve said since day one regarding this rifle that my belief is 168 or 175 smk with 43.4-44 grains of varget is likely the right formula for these rifles. 168 and 175 smk with 43.4 is my go to round in both 5R milspec bolt action rifles and 24” AR10t dnd rifles. You're aiming for sub .5 moa . The platform is capable of it. If I were a betting man then I would put money on 44 grains of varget with 2.8 OAL.

For reference Federal gold off the shelf ammo is pretty equivalent to 43 grains of varget for the powder load. I suspect that’s just a bit too slow for these shorter barrels.

As always, reload at your own risk. Start lower and work up, looking for pressure signs etc.

So far the only thing I have changed is the trigger. Looking into another handguard to reduce the weight, but other than that it's fine the way it is. I have not had any other issues with this rifle in its current configuration.

I am glad I purchased the BCL102, as the MH is way overpriced for what it is, and its accuracy is suspect.

as long as it shoots xm80 at 4moa without stupid fte issues I'm good

I guess that isnt good enough for the keyboard warriors here...

I think some people were hoping to get a rifle that works reliably for $1800 without having to replace parts or send it back for repairs more than once to get a reliable rifle.
I can live with a crappy barrel for this price but I want the rifle to function properly

One is a AR10 and has non proprietary parts, The other you cant touch or modify.

You can change the barrel, bolt, hand guard, stock, buffer on a MH with common AR-10 parts, the carrier can be changed if you're willing to have a slot machined into the new one. Some guys have swapped in a different trigger but it's much harder and you really need to know what you're doing to do it safely.
They're not that different except one is well made and one is NEA.

I'm hoping that by the time the hype dies down, they drop the pre-order nonsense, and these can be found on retailers shelves (maybe gen 4) they will be reliable and that's when I'll buy one. Lots of potential but executed poorly by a company known for quality control issues.

Do what I did and shop the EE for a newer one set up the way you like it.

I'm looking forward to your range reports once you have your 102
