-------------------------------------

A hunter had a double dose of bad luck Thursday night, east of Prince George.

A black bear wandered into a hunting group's camp about midnight, entered an open tent door and attacked the sleeping man, according to B.C. Conservation officers.

In the melee, the man's hunting partners shot and killed the animal, but in the process the hunter was struck by a ricochet bullet.

He is recovering in hospital in Prince George.

The incident happened about 100 kilometres east of the city.

The extent of the man’s injuries is not known, but he has yet to be released from hospital.

Officers say the bear was in good health and about 350 pounds, and there was no obvious reason for the animal to be attracted to the camp.

Police and conservation officers both responded to the incident.

My first thought is that fellow hunters trying to shoot a bear attacking a buddy, are often more dangerous than the bear!

Ricochet, ya right

bullet could have entered the bear and exited into the poor guy.
crappy news, hope the guy pulls thru.
stay safe out there everyone.
one more reason for open wilderness pistol carry, best defense against a bear coming into your tent.

The rule in our camp is all clothes with food odour in the bear bag and no scent of food in the tent. I would bet money the guy had some food smell in there or on him.

Also, bad idea to leave the tent open when sleeping.

The COs investigated and found no attractants in the tent. It is a bad year here in central BC for black bears. The berry crop was early and burnt off quickly. Right now bears are wandering all over the damn place looking for food.

if you're in the tent, there's food smell...

They might be curious, but your scent is usually not an attractant unless you're menstruating or crapped your pants. The common attractants bringing them into a tent would be things like toothpaste or some food residue -- and the CO's wouldn't find anything if the guy say wiped his hands on his shirt from dinner a few hours before.

I saw 4 black bears around my place just today. Two of them weren't "good" bears - rather than moving off they both came right for me. Like a scared little girl I ran back inside.

I have come across way more "bad" bears this fall than in the last 20 years combined. Either they started chatting with each other saying "hey, those humans aren't scary - they're tasty!" or the food situation has really done a number on what would otherwise be some fairly good-natured critters.

I'm on high alert every time I go outside. And - - I live in town, not in the middle of the bush. Wish I could carry my handguns.

I was sitting on a rock 2 weeks ago in the pemberton valley waiting to ambush blacktail deer and had a black bear at under 30 yards come walkin by unaware of me till I stood up and yelled at him to ph**k off, rifle ready in case he did something dumb. To think of how many times I've laid back and had a snooze on that rock LOL
2 years ago, same spot I got charged by wolves and had to defend my self, killing 3.
I'll be treestand hunting that spot in the future

Agree these animals are pushed to their limit in BC. Bear, cats, moose, deer their all on the move for food if they want to survive the winter.

Already heard about the bear in your post about the double-header you scored where you broke your finger last week... And now wolves too!? And here I was thinking about asking if you'd be so generous as to show a young newbie around that area one of these days...

How can you shoot in the dark? You are more likely to hit a person.
I always keep a knife beside my pillow.
Non-restricted, very short OAL is good inside a tent, load it with OO buck if you are camping with others to try to minimize shoot throughs otherwise Brenneke slugs.

Chance favours the prepared mind.
