did you guys see that article where a black bear killed a woman in Ontario-and how much money the Ontario government spent on killing nuisance bears?
Sure makes you wonder when they are going to figure out the connection between the bear problems and shutting down the spring bear hunt.
Hunting bears results in bears with a healthy respect for people-in other words, safer bears.
T axpayers are now forced to spend money reducing bear populations-instead of collecting licence fees from hunters to do the same job.
You wonder what the so called ''animal rights people'' have to say now...they are strangely silent on the issue
If the government had any balls, they would face the issue head on ,reinstate the spring bear season-and come right out and explain why.

I live in BC, we have lot's of bear... I will get all the bear I can buy tags for this year (and try for a grizzly in the spring). I will keep doing this every year!

Seems like we are not raising the number of hunters we used to, both my daughters are interested in hunting and they both love bear jerky! I guess soon our little family will take several bears a year :D !

It happened about 2 hours away from me.

Local MNR wrote an article in the paper saying that the black bear 2 hours away was a different type of bear than we have around the city. Who the #### are they trying to kid? Ya, right, all of a sudden theres another species of black bear that lives 2 hours away and are killers but the one's that are raiding the apple trees right here in town are mellow and would lick you to death.

Propaganda B.S. How about not trying to feed us a load of crap and start getting on the govt's ass to bring the spring bear back.

To many MadDogs around your area

Dumb ass Liberals are just trying to preserve their image amongst the Yuppie elite.

Politics is about votes, not common sense. Write letters en masse to get your spring hunt back, and make damn sure they realize it will cost your vote if they don't. Forget about logic, think about votes.

Yes, the dancing bears in town sell Russian Matrioshkas and balance on giant beech balls for tips, the bears on the other side of the tracks, on the other hand, will eat you

Exactly WHICH yuppy elite are collectively stupid enough to buy that?!?

It's like deer in Southern Ontario... since it became not PC to hunt deer the number of deaths from cars striking deer has quadrupled and the insurance claims by farmers who've had nuissance deer lay waste to their crops has gone up even more than that...

But the ignorant Bambi-watching imported voter lieberal sheeple in Southern Ontario must be placated, so....

we have 2 species of bears here on the island-''nice bears''[bears on logging roads,or uphill from logging roads]and the regular bears-any bear downhill from anywhere. You can shoot ''nice'' bears, and the other species are just ''look at ''bears.

The only two different kinds of black bears that I know of here in Northern Ontario are the live ones and the dead ones. I have been seeing alot of the live ones and am working on seeing more of the dead ones.
MMMMMMMM MMMMMMMMMMMM GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The ministry has now called off the search which started following the attack on September 6, 2005 but staff continue to gather evidence.

The ministry is also sending the carcass of the animal for testing.

OPP NEWS RELEASE

7:50 A.M. UPDATE: Canadian Press is quoting Ontario Superior East OPP Sgt. Al Hardy this morning as saying that the injured man mentioned in this story is in serious but stable condition in a Sudbury Hospital. The bear is believed to have attacked the woman first, then the man. "I believe the man tried to scare it off somehow, I'm not sure how, and it was obviously too late then for her," the wire service quotes Hardy as saying.

Superior East OPP Detachment and the Ministry of Natural Resources are presently investigating a black bear attack at Missinaibi Lake Provincial Park 80 kilometres north of Chapleau.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. on the 6th of September, two men were hiking at the park and were confronted by a large black bear.

The two men were able to fend off the bear and continued on.

Approximately 45 minutes later, they came upon a male and female requiring assistance as a result of also being attacked by a black bear.

The female was killed in the attack and the male party was airlifted to St. Joseph's hospital in Sudbury with serious lacerations.

The bear is presently at large and wounded.

OPP officers as well as MNR canine officers will be attending the scene in an attempt to locate the bear.

The male and female were from the Cambridge area.

The investigation is continuing with more details to be released when further information is received.

"We have lost a wonderful professional and friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family," added Dr. Morris.

Any word on how big, how old , how healthy this bear was ?
I hope that the stab wound to the neck was sufficient to slow the bear down enough so that Ministry Staff was able to catch up to it ...I mean it would be fitting if Jordan contributed to the bears demise .

I had to shake my head when this "Fish and Wildlife tech"they interveiwed stated that these male bears are "Predater bears".ALL bears are predaters and opportunists,I really beleive they find humans easy prey because moose calves can outrun them and are more aware this time of the year.A survey crew working on a mine property near Kapuskasing was stalked by a medium size bear all day last week and not being allowed a firearm on the property were damn nervous.

How about that 13 year old kid that got clobbered by the grizz out near Burns Lake? Saw him on the news last night. He'll be the coolest kid in the 7th grade.

I was up in Hyder last year at the bear viewing site. I noticed they had a campground right where the bears are and videotaped a grizz digging in one of the campsites. I mentioned to my co-workers that you are asking for trouble having a campsite here. Now I am reading “Bear AttacksII, Myth & Reality” and the author mentions that someone was killed there in 2000 sleeping in a tent. No effing way would I pitch a tent there!

Maybe the guy who worked on the bear suit, could try making a bear proof tent?

BUM
That kid sure is taking it well, good on him

ratherbefishin ,you didnt say which island but I know the big is in the west nowdays I have devided the deer into the same subspieces and am thinking about doing it for grouseLOL

None of this surprises me. People get houses encroaching on bear territory and then wonder why it is that when there's no one hunting the bears, people get hurt. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to realize that common sense plays absolutely NO part in any of it.

I figure that if you respect the bear and be ready to make the bear respect you (from bear scares & spray, through the ol bullet to the brainpan) and this sort of trouble gets reduced pretty quickly.

The bit that does make me wonder though, are those who don't realize that a bear is a predator. Male or female, black, grizzly or any other species. Given the chance at an easy meal, they're just as quick to the "supper table" as a politician to the hog trough.
