A good 'ol hickory axe handle is what I suggest

I'm aware of a macho young fellow who attempted to put a bear in a snare out of it's misery with a hand axe. The bear had it's way with him before an onlooker shot the bear.
Killing a bear with a log or heavy stick with a sharp blow to the TOP of the head can be done. It is just too up close and personal. I would prefer a pump shotgun with a 20" or less barrel loaded with slugs - and a crossbolt safety infront of the trigger rather than the tang safety. Or maybe even the safety removed and carry on an empty chamber.
