So here’s my experience with bears thus far:
I’ve personally killed 13 black bears
Been present for twice that number
Run into enough while hiking all over B.C. that I couldn’t guess at the real number.
Number of times charged 2
Number of times bear successfully stopped without dispatching bear 2
Number of grizzlies seen while hunting/hiking - well over ten
Number of problems with grizzlies thus far - zero
First black bear charged from 20 yards, I was holding a rifle in my hands as I was deer hunting and didn’t have time to raise it. They are on you faster than you can react when that close. Chamber was empty, long story, bear stopped at about 15 feet, we stared each other down until I chambered a round with the gun pointed from hip level at the bear. At the sound of the bolt working he turned and ran off.
Second one was a big boar that was causing problems in the hood ( I live on an acreage ) he chased my daughter on her bike the day before. Early in the morning I stepped out of my shop to find my son coming out of the house with my 300. He said it had just been on our front deck and then wandered out the back. I followed it back through my property for a couple hundred yards to a creek in hopes of getting a clear shot. As I walked along a trail lined with alders it charged from about 25 yards. I could hardly make out the bear but his path was obvious as the alders shook as he ran. With a round in the chamber and the gun held low but ready to go I Didn’t actually have time to shoulder the gun, and get the sights properly on the charging bear. I fired at less than ten yards and sprinted to my left chambering another round. It was a clean miss, I believe the gunshot turned him. A neighbour shot it two days later as it was causing problems again.
What I’ve learned from my experiences:
They are fast as lightning, from 25 yards you’d have to have the gun already up and pointed. You’ve got one shot if you are lucky. The examples above show only my experience, but I think is does illustrate how much time you have. Not much, the second or two it takes you to begin to process what’s happening is about two seconds to long. Both times I had a rifle with a scope, likely a shotgun would have been better. But, if it wasn’t in my hands loaded and ready to fire it wouldn’t have helped much either.
Should you carry something to protect yourself, absolutely. But don’t underestimate their speed, there stealth, or their place on the food chain
