The 1918 Springfield reciever I have out West for the A1 project had a similiar cut on the right side. It was formly sporterized, but I just purchased the receiver, bolt turned down & sporterized barrel. The smith who is finishing the metal parts figures he can build the slot that is cut out back up without messing up the receiver. I'll get pics up of that barrel later. Bore is in great shape but milled down, drilled & tapped? (receiver was not), high lustre blue finish with a commercial ramp front sight. Really bubba'd!
