you fellows gave lots of good and consistent opinions about the best of the best for loading 90 gr bullets. I just got a new used Sav, HB in 243 to mess with at the range. I want to shoot a variety of 70gr bullets that I have, some ballistic tip and some match kings. So far I have found several loads with Win 760 from Reloaders nest.
What say my canadian Bretherin.
Thanks FS

I am bias toward Hodgdon Extreme powders for their temperature insensitivity. I am bias against ball powders like Win 760, and IMR powders due to temperature sensitivity issues. I think the easy best choice for the .243 with a 70 gain bullet is Varget. It is a trusted accuracy powder, and it can deliver the velocity as well if you want it.

Hodgdon data suggests 38 to 40.5 for Varget with a 70 grain.

Sierra recommends a little hotter with a range of 36.7 to 41.1 grains of Varget with a 70 grain. You may want to download that Sierra pdf and print it out for your future load data needs. You never know when someone decides to take a page down...

I use to shoot the BT's

Your Winchester 760 powder loadings are about as good as it gets, with 70-75 grain bullets, and maybe some a little heavier.
Only now, you are more apt to get the 760 powder under the Hodgdon designation of 414.
Just use the usual caution of building up the load, but in at least three 243 rifles, I have found 45 grains is an ideal load.

Not sure "which came first" - Varget or the 243 - but they were made for each other :)

thanks Bruce, I have a bunch of 760 I bought from Higginsons a few years ago

My Sako .243 is scary accurate with Varget and 70gr. Nosler BT's. A match made in heaven. If I wanted to shoot gophers waaaaay out there on a windy day, that'd be what I'd use. Just wish I had a use for bullets that light, I don't hunt varmints much, and they are too destructive on coyote pelts. The gr. 70 Bt is not a deer bullet.

You might want to consider the Nosler Partition 100 grain for deer...
