Well, each hunt I go on is another lesson in the world of calling coyotes, and I got another today :p

Well I set the alarm last night for 7:15am to go hunting this morning on my day off work. Got up in the morning, checked the temperature which was -20 and the wind chimes were making noise so I knew it wouldnt be nice out there. Back to bed I go

finally woke up at 8:45 and was out the door hunting by 9am

snowshoed about 15 minutes from the truck and set my Foxpro and Jack In the Box decoy out in the field, and I hid along a fenceline downwind. Wind was gusty and it was pretty cold out there, around -30 with the windchill.

It was pretty miserable out there and I was in an area that isnt exactly loaded with coyotes, as I was pretty close to town, on the fringe of residential/farmland.

Started off with some female interrogation howls, then went with some Lil' Jack rabbit distress. Due to the wind I never did turn off my Foxpro, I just let it run. About 10 minutes later I switched to female invitation howls, did about 10 of those in a span of 2 minutes. Switched to the Randy Anderson Jackrabbit distress and let it play steady for about 5 minutes, with the Jack in the Box twitching back and forth. I was going to call it quits, my nuts were frozen and the idea of being back in the house was sounding pretty good. I had turned off my Fx3 and happened to glance up when I see a coyote charging in across the field towards my decoy/caller.

I flip my lens covers up and track him in the scope, he is moving pretty fast and by the time I got the safety off he was getting close, inside 100 yards and still running hard. I let out a bark and he stopped and faced my direction, I let him have 70 grains of Nosler Ballistic Tip and on impact his front legs just stiffened and he tipped right over.

Tod, gotta love that eh.

I dont know how manby times I was frozen/Soaked/Windburnt/Sunburnt, and held it for a few more minutes...
It allmost allways pays off...
Nice looking Dog too, how do you find the 70's on hides?
Whats that I hear? your addicted to that 243? :):):):):)

Kersplat :) I wondered because the pic was pretty clean, even the snow isnt bloody...

you killed it a week ago, and just dragged it out for a better pic :)

Nah, all kidding aside, Nice.
Have you tried the 95's yet?

95 grain Ballistic Tip? no. I dont plan on hunting deer with my 243

Yeah, ballistic tips... Just wondered because they work so well out of my 243, and buck wind very well.

this time the 70 gr Nosler BT tore him open pretty bad, hit shoulder on entrance

Time for that 17 Remington :p

Good story, I was going to go out today, but it was too damn windy here, hopefully tomorow :D

Speaking of windy...

I used to go out in all weather conditions... I later learned that no wind is the best wind ( although I did once call one out of the bush in a heavy wind)

How much wind in KPH do you consider too much?

I have also seen coyotes and foxes just as i was packing up... usually they see me first.

how much wind is too much? I dont know if I can put a number on that but if it makes the trees sway and snow blow, its just about too much. 30 km wind is probably as much as Id want.

Calmed here this afternoon and I went out again but no luck  :D

Thanks good pics of the setup etc. I have been thinking about giving this yote hunting a whirl and this thread has gone a long way to peaking my interest even more.

Nice dog :D I thought you guys in B.C were getting nailed with these crazy storms every day??
Its been so bloody windy here in Sask or at least in my neck of the woods. Coyotes seem pretty safe this year, nobody can get out and hunt em.

Cheers!!

Cool!

I was reminded to be patient once again the other day when a buddy and I set up for yotes.

Started out with some howls, and had a reply a few minutes later, but it was WAAAAAY off in the distance.

Could see about 2.3 - 3km from where we were sitting and through my range finder I spotted a dog trotting to the timber at a 45 degree angle towards us.

Long story short.... over 40 minutes later we were just getting up to leave when she came out and followed an old creekbed right to us with only a few little squeels to coax her in. Shot her at 142yds w/the 280AI and 120gr Vmax (big female).

Got the entire works on video.

That makes 15 for me and my pard... good percentage of 'em are on video too!
