Ran into a guy yesterday at crappy tire I have not seen in years. We called him the regal beagle here since he was a big time breeder of rabbit hounds and avid rabbit hunter. In general conversation asked why he was not out rabbit hunting on such a fine day.
No sir gave it up three years ago as did most of the guys. I don't have the dog kennels any more nothing. Why?? Well about 6 years back the coyotes here clued in that when they heard the howl of a hound on a rabbit it was dinner time. If they did not get the rabbit the hound was chasing they would tear the hound apart and eat him. I lost over 12 champion dogs in two years and know of probally 40 more killed this way so I gave it up.
Nothing at the end to see rabbit, then hound chasing then 3-4 coyotes after the dog. :(

It would suck to lose a dog like that, let alone that many!
I would think if there were enough rabbits to justify a hunt then the coyotes would be well fed too.
It must have been hard for the guy to give up something he was obviously passionate about.

where in nova scotia was this? i grew up just outside of halifax i only ever seen one yote. are the coyotes getting that bad down there.

Getting bad, the last 7 years or so it seems they are everywhere. I am 90% sure in the evening here in town I could call them right up into my back yard. Just the other night the wife had two follow her and the dogs when they went for a walk. I see at least one every two weeks or so.
When a firealarm goes off in the town they are howling with it all around us.
The regal beagle if I remember correctly would hunt mostly in cape breton and had a cabin also just outside Truro somewhere where they hunted also..
