And another long, hard suck on the big green weiner!!!

Goddammit...! I am in a slump of epic proportions. Ya know how it goes: ya shoulder the M14, ya let those sweet match sights line themselves up and when everything lines up the guns just seem to fire themselves. Hell - for me that was the biggest challenge - let the gun shoot itself and don't interfere with it!

For the last little while my sights just won't settle. I start fluttering in the breeze and waving about and the next thing I know is I am trying to shoot skeet - wait for the target to flash over the sights, slap the trigger and hope for the best! I have even flinched once or twice now. Do I have to go back to the .22? At my age?

I think it is all the coffee I am drinking. Maybe I should take a tall flask of cheap corn whisky and slam it to counter act the caffeine! Drastic problems require drastic measures. About 6 oz. should do it...

I assume you are shooting standing/kneeling and not off a bench rest? (if you are shooting from a bench rest you might already be drunk)
If that's the case, shoot from an assisted position and get back to the basics.

Sight Picture
Breath
Squeeze

And yes, drink coffee in the morning (no sane man will ever stop drinking coffee altogether) and go shooting in the afternoon.

I feel you buddy, I've taken a day off work, driven 45min to the range, spent hundreds of dollars on ammo for the day, shot like crap and found myself thinking on the way home "WTF did I just acomplish!?"

For me, the worst thing I can do while at the range, is let myself be rushed. Be it my schedule, other shooters around me, or thinking ahead to what I want to shoot next.
Each round chambered deserves your full attention...follow your routine.

Good shooting!

Yes, I am shooting off my hind feet, an no I am not advocating booze for accuracy enhancement so much as venting my frustrations.

I do just fine from the prone position, Mauser Dog. Sitting is good too. I used to be a fair offhand shot from all the time I wasted with the black powder geeks. I did forty rounds today and didn't settle down until the last ten! I wonder if I should just go home on bad range days or maybe take a break for awhile. I usually go 2~3 times a week...and I have been in slumps before but never this bad! It's infuriating - it normally takes a very good gun club duffer or a full blown competition level shooter to beat me but these days I couldn't outshoot my grandmother who has cataracts.

Sorry for the snivelling boys, I will figure it out, a fella just has to be patient.

This happens to everyone. We all have off days especially when we're talking about a complex repetitive skillset. Human nature is not robotic so don't sweat it. Its easy to get complacent with something you're good at and it just wakes you up to the fact that you need to slow down, remember the basics and focus your attention on your task. It'll come back to you but only if you bring it back. Less coffee, less distraction and less rush makes for success. Good luck!

this may sound crazy but mindfulness or kundalini yoga meditation can help... sometimes your not " in " the moment, and this can bring you " in " the moment

-yah, i kinda scoffed at it as well... and felt like a kookoo sitting there chanting, but it can take away that frazzled feeling and doesn't cost any money

Baha. That is precisely the reaction I was going for, thank you sir. And I'm just ribbing you. If it works for you, power to ya. Why can't we all just get along? *Takes heaping spoonful of quinoa and bean curd*...

I was having similar trouble a while ago, I just couldn't hear my rifle my "Pinggg" ; which as we all know. is truly a sign that you are at one wjth the gun and Everything.
Then I let Buddha into my life and have never looked back :)
It may not be tactical, but its a direct fit to most platforms and is available at your local hippy shop ( usually next to the incense or behind the bongs )

My groups tightened up and now everyone can hear my rifle "PINNGGGG"
Burning some joss sticks also helps keep the bugs out of your eyes.

"Ommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm"

Your physical body follows directions from the brain, and the brain thinks in terms of visuals. Concentrate on what the perfect sight picture looks like and squeeze 3 of the 5 pounds of the trigger. the brain will pull the trigger by itself when the sight picture looks right. This takes some practice.

Well boys, this morning I woke up cranky and miserable and took an enormous dump. Then I slammed two large black coffees and enough cholesterol to kill 6 truckers and maybe a Marine. Then I headed out to the range. I slowed right down and slowly but surely chugged through another 40 rounds. Because I was out of precision reloads yesterday I had to buy factory stuff today. All I could find was some Zombie 168 gr. (groan) and some garden variety Winchester 168's. I don't have my mojo back yet...but I did alright. I know now that I was not following through, and I suspect that if I can get my mind and muscles around Gander's principles above I should be back in the game. I am going to take the weekend off though...I have some serious reloading to do and a motorcycle that needs to be fixed or pushed off a cliff.

I am really surprised at that Zombie ammo I got. I thought it would be crap made to go 'bang' and fit for fanboys and pikers...but it DID shoot reasonably well. I suppose I should have bench rested and tested it...but it just didn't seem to be worth the bother. I will probably never buy it again...

One Lung - a suggestion for you: sometimes practice/training with a different gun will help - I dunno why ( maybe something to do with taking the pressure off ) but it does work. So take out a bolt gun and shoot a bunch and then come back to the M1A and shoot like you know you can. You know, this stuff is mostly in your head - just like golf: figure your sand wedge wont work and guess what ...
