Today I found an interesting sportered savage. The serial number is 0C01883, and it is a No4 MkI*. I didn't see any early features other than the serial. It has a 2-groove barrel (cut down, unfortunately).
Actually, that's a very late Savage. After they hit 99C, they went back to 0C and a 5-digit serial number. Ended at about 63036 according to Stratton's book.
The earliest 0C models only had a 4-digit serial number.
