Another Fine little sporting mauser "spoke" to me & followed me home.

This one is Austrian, stocked in the Manlicher style & chambered for 8x57.

It is inscribed "Franz Neuber & Sohn Gewehrfabrik Wienerneu, Stadt Na"

Anyone ever seen a mauser action with a hexagonal front ring like this?

I know the recoil pad has to go. And I need to make a replacement forend tip, any idea what would be appropriate, horn, ebony, sterling, steel??

Any tips or leads on where I might find scope mount parts to complete this set-up?

The original scope mounts were likely soldered to the original European scope. The scope packed it in and the rings and scope are lost in time and the rifle became open sight useful only. NECG may have rings that can be fitted to the bases. It will take a skilled gunsmith to do it and the cost will not be even close to low. I'd venture a guess at $700.00 or more. You should send your picture to guys like Ralf Martini , Bill Leeper and probably some others I don't know and ask their opinion. I have seen these actions done in the octagonal style before (pictures only). A recent thread on AR stated that actions that have the front receiver rings dovetail cut for the scope base are no longer accepted for proof in Germany and are destroyed. I really don't know if that is true or not. If you are loading for the rifle it may pay to use a bit of discretion.

As for the fore end tip is there a screw or small bolt hole through the underside of the tip? If there is it would indicate to me that it once had a steel tip. If there is no hole I would expect the tip to have been ebony or horn possibly with a discreet schnabel. It would have been glued and possibly doweled.

A possible place to watch is Ebay....I found a spare set of claw rings from Yugoslavia for my BRNO 22F.
They are a perfect fit and priced quite reasonable.
I did see a set or rings listed that would match your bases a month ago, I realize that doesn't help you now but it wouldn't hurt to check once in a while.

Interesting piece Mark. The Austrian's have a style of their own eh? Looks like might have started out as a square-bridge. Styled after an Oberndorf Model S. Being 8X57, she's probably a "kicker", hence the recoil pad. Might want to consider an old-english decelerator.

Thank you all for the input gents, (not so much you Big Ugly Man)

I've convinced myself that the forend tip should be horn, firstly to match the grip cap, secondly because there is no means of mechanical attachment (no pin, dowel nor screwholes) so I beleive the original was simply glued on. (Thanks Tumbleweed & Stocker)

The stock is only 13.5" to the front trigger excluding the pad & the inletting is still visible from the spur at the heel, I think I'll keep some rubber on it & keep it stretched out to 14.5".

I'll bother some of the folks you suggest, and keep an eye on E-bay & other online sources. I'd hate to resort to modern mounts, but I don't think I can hunt it with these tired old eyes & the irons on it.

The rear sight is a wonder of craftsmanship, but I cannot get a clear photo. Although it is a single standing leaf, it is adjustable by a vertical screw which adjusts the height by meaans of a vertical dovetail arrangement. The parts fit together so precisely I did not originaly notice the multiple pieces.

for fitting rings or scopes to these old guys I found the best to be klaushiptmayer@sympatico.ca
search him on the web also
he does great work - send him the rifle and the scope you want to use and he will fit modern rings to the old bases and scope

or if you have an old scope he can make it fit the bases

the trouble with most of these old rifles - the dimensions of the bases / scopes are usually a little different in every case. They were all hand fitted.

Way to go Mark, another great score. As mentioned already you need to get rings made by Martini or someone of that ability to do the rifle justice, it's just too nice not too.
Judging by how much the bolt stop is proud of the stock it must be very slender through the wrist. Have fun holding on to her. LOL Keep the loads real mild and I am sure you've heard it before but don't shoot it until you ensure the bedding can take it.

Love the bottom metal.

And Kevan. clear off the couch. I'm moving in until you sell me your claw mounted Brno, like it or not.
