So when I use a bit of Flitz or Autosol on my Blued revolvers (Old & new Colts, S&W's, Rugers etc) the polishing cloth shows a brownish deposit even when there is no visable staining on the gun. Would that be oxidation that is coming off or am I removing the actual blueing and it's showing as brown on the cloth?

You are starting to remove the bluing. Flitz is an abrasive and if you use it enough, you will end up with nicely polished bare steel.

I have used Flitz on a bore mop in a cordless drill to polish chambers in a revolver and also to polish reloading dies.

Flitz is also a chemical corrosion remover. Blue could be construed as corrosion on a steel surface.
