Another G36C build

Last week, I shot some Krylon Tan on the Marauder / Nomad. At this point, the build has the IDZ stock, flat rail, Dlask extended charge handle (with Maple Leaf, bien sur), Dlask side rails, fab grip, and bolt buffer:

This week, my 10" bbl arrived as did a barrel shroud. I could not resist a quick mock-up photo:

The yellow arrow indicates a point of interference between the shroud and the chassis. The shroud actually slides back another inch or so, until its practically flush with the bottom-front of the upper receiver (where the two screws go).

A quick look and I think I can dremel the chassis back and still have the shroud fit OK. I put the original stock on as I'm contemplating having 2 versions of the same rifle; one short bbl and one long bbl. If I go that route, I only want to have to pin 1 stock. Haven't decided which, but I happy to see the IDZ stock fully collapsed keeps the OAL above 26".

On the way is a G36C fore end:

I need to play around in photoshop a bit, as I am actually debating not using any kind of fore end at all. Photochop to follow if I can figure it out.

What if I got rid of the fore grip altogether, chopped the front sight mount from the upper receiver, and then cut the sight rail back as indicated on the picture? BTW, rear sight rail is going to have a bushnell TRS 32 on it.

The shorter fore grip arrived. It's not going to be a drop in fit, but I think I can make it work. For $25, it's in keeping with the budget concept.

When the lower hooks are in place, it forces the grip to be unparalleled with the stock upper:

When I line up the grip with the upper, the lower hooks don't match, so a little bit of trimming will be required:

Even with the lower hooks trimmed, the hole is too far forward, and creates this gap on the top:

The front is also going to need some plastic removed:

Took a bit more filing than I thought, but eventually got the short fore end to fit. Under a coat of paint it looks OK. Just need to fit the sling and it's done. The laser has a momentary switch than I can flick on by using the knuckle on my index finger. Stock is pinned using a .40 S&W casing in place of the spring (thanks for the tip on that).

After a couple attempts at painting, and being not totally happy with the results, I wondered if I could use Photoshop to mock up some cam schemes before committing to actual paint. Here's some random ones...

I'm holding off on the camo painting for now and will leave it in the olive green.

I swapped out the 10.5" bbl with a 12". Added a fake can to it, and a NC Star 1.5x6x40 scope. The scope is one with a built-in sunshade that I never really liked, so I cut it off with a dremel tool. Folding stock remains pinned to keep OAL >26".

Very nice build. I have a Nomad kit too I intend to either finish with the G36 handle sight or finish as a 22 mate to my SL8. I can't believe some of the G36 accessories your finding. I can't find them for my SL8. I would love to have one of those low aluminum rails.

If you pull off those kinds of camo jobs, I really want to know how you got there - especially if you didn't have to use airbrush.

Thanks Moe - A lot of the Nomad accessories can be found in the airsoft aisles. I have no problem fitting airsoft stuff to .22LR, but for an SL8...ahhh..not so much . I really like the Troy G36 rail/handguard, but its way too spendy for a 10/22 conversion.

Slaymoar - I'd be using an airbrush and / or sponge to achieve those effects. The hard edge stuff can be done with careful masking and canned spray paints. Tamiya (model paint) I think could be used as a good source of cammo colours, and then made more durable with an overspray of clear matte arma-coat / ceracote.

They only have 8" and 12.5", I asked if they could make a 10.5" for me and they declined

Hmm, I think 8" would be too short. Maybe you could permanently attach a longer brake to it and that would get you closer to 10"?

I’m thinking about going the other way, going long instead of short. It’s a nice stock, but it’s heavier than hell and cumbersome with the barrel I’ve got on there.

A 10/22 has no business being heavier than my AR. It’s a nice rifle, and I’m happy with the way she shoots so I’m thinking about taking some of the tacticool stuff off it (rails, fore grip and flashlight), and get the longer 6-hole SL8 style forend for it. Anyone know where to get one locally? Would an airsoft version fit? Midwayusa has original HK forends for $40, but I suspect it’s an ITAR item and I won’t be able to bring it back. (don’t ask me why their picture is upside down).
