Start with this thing is fun to shoot, its easy to hit a 4 inch gong at a 100yrds prone.

But..

I cant seem to get more than 3 rounds in the tube magazine ? Its a 30-30.

I assume you just push them in through the port on the side to load them, and I thought they where supposed to take 6 or 8 shells total (correct me if I am wrong). Anyone had a problem similar to this before. I bought it off my Uncle for way less than it was worth (as I did a 7mm RM Model 700 which I took my first two deer with this year), and he said it has always been tricky to get them in after the second round.

Any tips or links on how to take this apart to get it working correctly would be most appreciated.

And yes I did Google it but couldn't find anyone with a similar problem, did find some guides how to disassemble, but assuming you guys are better then Google right ?

Thanks

Does the magazine tube extend to the muzzle of the barrel or is it a 1/2 mag? If a full mag then you should probably take it apart and see if there is any kind of magazine plug in the spring or if the magazine tube is dented where it can't be seen or if the barrel band (if it has a band) screw has damaged the tube causing a projection of the tube wall. While you have it apart scrub the inside of the tube with a bore brush and patch in case it's just plain gummed up with rust and dirt.

Its a full length tube magazine, no visible dents or anything on it, with the amount of use I have seen it get in the last 20 years ( or lack of use, first time I have seen it shot was me after I bought it) it could just be a binding spring on some rust or something. Guess I will have to pull it apart.

Would I have to put a plug in to use it for hunting in Alberta? How does the magazine restriction work for center fire rifles anything over 5 (4 in the mag one in chamber) has to be plugged?

Thanks Again

You may have a plug in the magazine. I can't imagine why this would be, but worth a check.
My dad's old model 12 Win. pump had a wooden dowel in it to serve as a plug because of the 3 shot magazine rule for ducks and geese.

Some guys put a plug in the 26" rifles because they were quite muzzle heavy with a full load-also took all morning to unload them. Don't see it often though. Probably another cause. The picture shows a carbine which only held about 5 in the magazine plus one chambered, not quite certain but not as many as 8.

It should hold 6. Have a look at the mag tube for any dents. Then look inside. Some putz may have plugged it in error. Clean the tube as well.
"...just push them in through the port..." Yep. Get a manual and read it. http://stevespages.com/page7b.htm
"...the magazine restriction..." That's for semi-auto's only. However, there may be Provincial hunting regs rules too. A small dowel will work as a plug if required. Not likely to be required though.

have you tried laying the 30-30 shells along the outside of the tube to see how many it can theoreticaly hold ?

to find if there is a block in the tube. take the screw out of the end of the mag tube. LONG spring so be careful. it will shoot across the room. (or take your eye out) it may take some doing to get the spring back in.

the 5 shot mag restriction for centerfire rifles only applies to semiauto's. if the mag tube is dented you can make a mandrel, which is a steel bar slightly smaller than the inside demension of the tube. this can be hammered into the tube to the point where it's just past the dent, the hammered back out the way it went in. this should straighten the tube. clean out the tube for rust and gunk as well. the mag spring should be cleaned to.

Thanks for this tips.

I pulled the magazine tube out tonight and started to clean it all up. The magazine follower was covered in a "varnish" type crud. And the tube was full of it. When I started the follower would not slide through the tube, but when I was done it slides through the magazine tube pretty slick. I didn't think that the tube would fit that tight around the follower. Don't have any loaded shells around the house to check if it will load smooth right now, will have to make a few up on the next weekend and give it a go.

After seeing the grime in the magazine I think I will pull the whole thing apart clean the action, and give the wood a nice drench of linseed oil (unless someone has another type of oil that works good on this wood).

Again thanks everyone, glad it wasn't a bent mag tube..
