Another moose rifle question

If I was going to hunt moose with those, I'd pick a 130-140gr TTSX for the .260, a 300gr XTP for the 45 colt and a 170gr soft point for the 30-30 and have at er.

Invited where? If the hunt is with an outfitter than you had better check to see what they allow as a minimum calibre. In my opinion the 30-06 is the king of the castle for hunting in North America. You can go bigger or you can go smaller but thier really is no point in either. A .308 is very close to a 30-06 and is an excellent choice but I prefer the 30-06 as it throws bigger bullets just a little bit better than a .308. A good quality version of either calibre can be had brand new for sub $550 (Savage, Weatherby).

Not an outfitter just a group that had an open spot at their camp.

I realize that the 30/06 is probably the best option if I was buying an new rifle. This thread is more about how to make what I have already work best for this year. Thanks to everyone that have made good bullet suggestions for the calibers I have.

Happy hunting

I like that heavy bullet option in your 45LC for short range work. What kind of Bush/cover are you working in ?

I believe it is typical Ontario bush, it is in Cloyne and from the Google map looks fairly thick. I really like the 92, it is light, very quick to point and hits like a Mack truck.

Yep, not unlike an area I hunted in WMU 59 and yes for the 92, Ive got an old Win 92 in 44WCF that has taken Moose and Deer, your 45LC will hit harder for sure. The 260 should be fine in the open areas (at reasonable ranges).

Nice thing about the Barnes bullets is they make small guns "bigger" :)

Nobody would argue that a 30-06 with 180gr cup and core bullets is not enough for moose. Well, the .260 with a 140gr TSX bullet will offer the same performance as the 180gr 30-06 load that has killed so many moose.

Load your .260 with a TSX and use with confidence. More than enough for moose.

The .30-30 and 170gr SP's has killed a fair few moose, too ;)

I'd take the .260 and TTSX bullets, and the .30-30 and 170gr SP's, and use whichever one seems like it's more suited to the terrain and style of hunting once you get there...

All will work fine. Take the gun you shoot best standing up. Limit range accordingly. Moose are not known to be hard to kill.

That would be the 92, I shoot that the most and am most comfortable in the standing position. I would need something to lean the .260 on because of the weight, which in the bush shouldn't be a big deal, but it is also a tack driver!

This sounds like my best option.

It's not that bad, 12.4lbs scoped but unloaded:D

Any more thoughts on 45Colt? She is loaded to about the 44mag with a hell of a heavy bullet.

Take all three of the dang shooters and buy some rounds around the campfire.
Maybe some one will have a soft heart and trade yu a real moose rifle for
the Colt............:p
There has been better deals had over a slurpee around the campfire than a hand shake.
Good luck hunting for Bullwinkle............:)

I got an invite for my first moose hunt this fall and I am feeling a little under gunned.

I have three rifles that may fit the bill and I can reload for all three.

First off is a Winchester 1894 30-30, I do have dies for 30-30 but haven't started reloading for it yet because I have a couple hundred factory rounds still kicking around.

Second is a Rossi 92 45 Colt that I only reload for, my loads are:
250gr cast( way to weak for moose) 7.4gr Unique
300gr hard cast with 21.5gr H110
340CCgr hard cast with 23gr H110 (possible 100yd for moose?)

Third is a Savage 10FP in .260, right now I only load Amax for paper punching.

Thoughts on these three chamberings as a moose rifle from some experienced guys would be appreciated!

I know there are better calibers out there but this is what I have and I am not sure if I can swing another rifle this year and afford all my hunting and fishing trips.

Thanks

Because of the expected terrain/area I'd go with the .45 Colt/1892 combo as a first choice! It'll work fine out to 100-125yds...150yds if you are a good shot and can range your distances. Second would be the 1894/.30-30 Win. 175-200yds is possible with the right ammo and nut behind the trigger. Last choice would be the bolt gun...not because of the chambering but simply because of the weight.

I'd go out and buy a bubba'd 303 for $100,go to wallmart and buy a couple of boxes of shells, shoot one box and take the second box with me..and make sure theres room in the freezer
