Cannot quite make out the inscription but it could be Siamese who reworked arisakas after WWII including converting to 30-06. Have not seen a reference to this configuration.
 
While admittedly I've never had the chance to see one, I'd imagine its a cut-down Siamese .30-06 or something similar.
 
Not 30-06 as as the receiver lacks the little cutout at the front to clear the longer round.

The stock appears to be an original type 38, modified to fit the M1 sling/oiler. The forestock looks like it has been narrowed as well.

I had read of Arisakas being used by China post war modified in this fashion but hadn't seen a pic before. Indonesia may have done something similar.
 
I think carbines for collectors has some info on them. I seem to remember something about a jap rifle in a m1 carbine stock. Taiwan I think.

i think it was thailand for police use.
 
wow, nice little carbine! Arisakas are actually very versatile because of their strong actions. that is probably why they are all over southeast asia.

So is it a genuine 'all miltiary' variant?

Or a cut and chop job?

It looks funny BUT it doesnt look as though it was recently carved up....To some collectors of Jap rifles this thing COULD be worth a samll fortune
 
Well, IMHO - and I don't pretend that its educated, I think it IS a rare variation - which has been cut up. Maybe a Chinese conversion - are you sure its in 6.5 x 50mm? It may be worth taking a chamber cast. If you haven't already you should try the gunboards Japanese forum.

Only had one 'for sure' from gunboards..."Thai police carbine made by Arisaka"

Who knows...needs to be a better price before I would buy it
 
It's not collectible as a JAPANESE rifle anymore, but may be as a Siamese rifle - not sure. I don't know my Siamese rifles well, but it is DEFINITELY Siamese marked.
