wilson combat has released the 7.62x40 wt.
The 7.62x40 WT is based on the inexpensive and readily available 5.56x45 Nato cartridge case. The 5.56 case is shortened to 1.560” and then re-sized (single operation) in a standard 7.62x40 WT sizing die which results in a formed 7.62x40 WT case with a finished overall case length of 1.565”. The cartridge is designed for 110-150gr .308” diameter bullets loaded to supersonic velocities, but if chambered in a 1-8 twist barrel is also suitable for heavy bullet subsonic use.

762x40 should really be considered to be for 110-125gr bullets only. The use of heavy subsonics will reveal two problems.

1. The case length will require the long heavy bullets to be seated very deeply in order to fit within an AR mag.

2. The extra case length is a bit too big for the typical 9.5 to 10gr of powder used for subsonic loads.

The 762x35 (300 Whisper or Blackout) is a better choice for heavy subsonics.

I didn't think that the 7.62x40 was designed to be subsonic like the 300 blk/wspr. It was designed to be an effective 7.62mm cartridge used in a 5.56mm length mag.A more reliable round than the 7.62x39 in a AR-15 if you will.

I don't get it.

If you want an AR15 with more power, but an AR10! Problem solved.

90% of the calibers that are out there right now are for niche markets anyways.
