Another newbie hunting question: how far away from your car/camp do you hike?

I usually have a quad or a truck near by, but don't enjoy hunting on them so much. I can get 5 or 6 kilometer loop into a decent river valley trail system. I'll walk it every single morning if i can, and even better if there is an ATV restriction during big game season, all the road hunters stay on the road at least until noon.

In Ontario, as long as your vehicle is clear of the traffic lanes, and it's not posted "no parking", then you should be fine. We've dropped trucks on the side of the road (to save a 2 hour walk back to the truck with a canoe after rafting downt he river looking for ducks) all over the place and never had an issue.

At worst, it can draw the attention of the Fish & Game guys and we've had them sit and wait for us to return. They'd ask to see our Mibratory Bird Stamps and PAL's, compliment our success then be on thier way.

thanks alot im in southern ontario

no migratory bird stamp though just my small game licence, i wont be carrying anything bigger than 7.5 lead shot :)

Just be sure to check the regs for when and where you are hunting ... with Duck/Goose season, Deer Shotgun and Deer Archery seasons all on or about to start in the next while in our area, there may or may not be restrictions on what you can hunt and what you can hunt with.

wmu 48 here I think im good to go for small game Im pretty sure I dont have to wear hunter orange but will anyways, gun season for deer here isnt until november...so i think im good to go for small game

went out for a hike today , ended up with one red squirrel, we also spooked a grouse like 3 times in some pretty thick bush....youd be surprised how hard squirrel are to hunt :)

until your deer hunting and trying to be quiet, then the little buggers are everywhere making a racket when the spot you.

Start hunting at your truck. Glass everything before you get out and continue to look at every inch of ground every few steps until you either see something or find a place you'd like to sit.

I am currently calling elk into a willow patch that is 150 yds from a well travelled road and a few 100 meters from where I park. There are probabley 40,000 acres of hunt-able land in deeper but there are no more elk there then close to the road.

Just keep the door slamming and cranked heavy metal music to a minimum on arrival.

Go as far as you're willing to haul a carcass back. This might be shorter in the evening and very short for large game.
