I just got my PAL in the mail yesterday, and I'd like a nice .22 (new or used) to start out with.

I'd like something accurate enough to target shoot with, fun enough to plink with, and cheap enough for me to buy.

Either bolt or semi is fine... maybe even a lever, but no single shots.

A 10/22 is ultimately on my list, but it's a bit too rich for my blood right now. I've been looking at some models like the Cooey 60 (repeater) and 64, Savage Mk II, CZ 452, and some others.

Can anyone make any suggestions?
 
What's your budget, a good used 10-22 can be had for around $200 if you keep an eye on the EE forums. Any bolt action .22 should be more accurate than most stock 10-22's. But not near as much fun.
 
You can find 10/22s for reasonable prices both new and used. Cash in your beer / pop cans for a few extra bucks, or roll up your spare change dish! Like Steeleco says.... 10/22s are soooooo much fun!
 
The CZ 452 (or a 453) would be the most accurate of the bunch but a lot more money than a Savage. Depending on the 10/22 prices vary from about $250.00 new (for the RPF synthetic/blued 18.5" bbl) up to or over $700.00 - depends on which Ruger you want. Check Wholesale sports or SIR mailorder...

I guess $200 would be my limit for now... I suppose that I could stretch that to $250 if the right rifle came along. I wouldn't pay more than that because decent milsurps aren't much more money.
 
Theres some fun looking .22 rifles on the Marstar website. Check out those Norincos.
FWIW, I agree with the other guys and say get a 10/22. Once you get one, you'll be amazed at all the stuff you can do with it. Heavy barrels, target sights, pistol grip stocks, big mags...it goes on and on. I have shot my 10/22 more than any other gun, rifle, shotgun or pistol that I have. Its not uncommon to blow off a brick of .22 ammo in one trip to the range with a 10/22.:cool:

Nothing wrong with the old rifles, esp' if you are starting out. And as many can tell you about their Rifle collection...over the years many Rifles will come and go, but a good old .22 tends to be around the longest, and get used the most. Esp' if it is a simple and reliable rifle. :D

So IMHO I'd walk down to the local Gun store in your area and check out the used guns rack. Take your time to shoulder each one and examine how they work, and For $60 to $100 you can walk out with something like a nice old Single shot, Heavy barrel, bolt action Cooey (or other model of yesteryear) , and a big brick of ammo.

Then Sign-up with a local range/gun club, and have fun, and build your marksman skills...this is something that cannot be bought.

And don't worry it most likely won't be your last rifle anyway. :cool:
 
Place an ad in the equipment exchange, state what you want and your budget, you'll have lots to choose from. I don't know if you will see many 10/22's for $200 or less, but Cooey's, various Mossberg models and others should be plentiful.

I've got my eye on a few Cooey model 60's right now... I just don't know how these models perform because I've never shot one.

After this purchase, I wouldn't mind getting a single-shot Cooey that has been tapped and drilled for use as a 'marksman' rifle.
 
I have 2 cooey model 60's and I must say they are both EXCELLENT rifles, plus you are buying into a piece of Canadian history.

I refinished the stock and barrel on one of mine, and it looks brand new.

With the iron sights it comes dangerously close to putting my browning semi auto 22 to shame, and its scoped.

Make a model 60 your sharpshooter!!

Take a drive down hwy 11 to elwood epps, they have 2 listed for about 60-80 bucks!

I've been planning to stop there... I'll probably drop by when Stacey and me head down to the auto show in February.
