This rifle we can be sure was used on the Buffalo Hunts of the 1870s. The gun has 13 lb barrel and 1 1/4" across the flats. It is a Meacham Conversion in .45 cal.
This gun must have had colorful history as it started out as 1863 Carbine and the serial number puts it in between two documented guns (#53414 &
#53443) that were issue in 1864 to Co. D, 2nd Illinois Volunteer Cavalry. It then had the Meacham Conversion and as the late Frank Sellers wrote in his book, "Sharps Firearms" these guns were then shipped out to either Denver or Cheyenne. After seeing use out West ( one can only imagine it being used by some Buffalo Hunter) it ended up in Whitehorse in the NWT, maybe for bear hunting. It was bought in the 80's by a Sharps collector in Ontario from whom I purchased it from. The gun shows lots of use but the bore is excellent. The gun is now being used in Northern Sask. and being hunted with like it was meant to be.

Fascinating history. To hunt and shoot with such a gun brings things to a whole new level of enjoyment.

Very nice !
I guess with that heavy barrel that gun woulda been good for shooting out the window of the Trains as they steamed accross the old west.

I wonder if they used Bypods and such with that heavy barrel you aint shooting without a rest.
