Another Pack....

Actually, some of us have soaked a small piece of cloth, maybe only 4" square, in hot parrifin. When it is cold you wrap your matches in it and put it all in the little container you carry the matches in. Even half of that, or less, will get a tough to light fire going. Some of the commercial stuff in the camping section is also very good and almost nothing to carry.
Another sensible little thing that could be a life saver, is a very small piece of sandpaper, for lighting the match on, when everything else is soaking wet. That goes in with the waxed cloth and matches.
I laughed too, when I read about the fellow with the propane, because I have often been in too much cold for propane. And some of those things are butane, and that is even worse.
 
I got a chuckle there too - I'm the opposite - I only carry my tiny propane stove around in the Summer... they're no good in the winter.

When it's really cold in winter, there is always enough "Old man's beard" hanging in the trees to get a fire going. I confess to also carrying some commercial starters in my bag for dire emergency though.
