Yes, you got that right... Another review for this neat little addition.
Finish
Wow, great parkerizing, through and through. No goofy light spots or darker spots (shows the true nature of heat treating and sometimes the heat treating can be shoddy). This unit is well finished. No sharp edges like my last couple of Norinco 1911A1 .45 ACP and NP29 a single stack 1911 9mm.
Fit
Fantastic. No slop on the insides. Fits inside your chinese trigger group immediately. I even used the same roll pin; I'm surprised that I did not shatter the (traditionally thin walled) roll pin that came from the factory
Getting it on
I drifter the roll pin (2 x 4 wooden blocks are your friend) using a Lyman 5/32" roll pin punch, just enough to clear the supports on either side of the factory mag release. Saves you having to hunt all over the shop floor for a dropped roll pin.
OIL... yes oil the roll pin on the inside and outside, also inside the pivot hole of the new/incoming oversized mag release. Do I have to explain why?
I used a 1/8" pin punch as a 'slave' pin to align the parts. Then I called my wife down to the workshop bench, placed the 5/32" Lyman roll pin punch and plastic hammer (hardly breaks the skin if she misses the pin punch and whacks MOI)
I had to jockey the alignment of the pin's travel by tweaking the slave pin (1/8" pin punch) back and forth. Yes, the fit is amazingly firm and snug. Not too sloppy, just right. Great job on the design/drawing/measurements.

Another view, check out the pin punch dimensions...

Testing:
Damn this thing makes me look good! Works perfectly even when I deliberately tried to misalign Norc M14 5/20 magazines.
So, I mounted the trigger group with the new NEA mag release into my Norc M14... so far so good. Almost as wide as the USGI glass stock, but not wider. Laid the rifle down on the work bench surface and ensured that there was no contact with the table top/flat surface. Life is good
....
I pulled out my 4 x 5/20 rd magazines and over the rubber floor mats in the workshop, I tried my Israeli style magazine changes (I am deadly in the mirror with my Krav Magaaa technique
).
No seriously, the mag changes were wickedly fast (I practice a lot) but way more confident because the mag release is wide on both sides. Hey
Great for a lefty. So I tried doing my mag changes with my opposite master hand. Life is great!
I quickly adopted the prone position (not on the cement floor, I'm too old for that) and proceeded to carry out the mag changes (simulates the 300 yard Prone rapid fire in NRA High Power course of fire). Life is ducky! Just ducky!
Wow, I'm a hero.
I'm trying very hard to find something negative about this mag release, but I'm gonna have to suggest that it is quite large and goofy looking, but does it ever work. I even put on my MOLLE London Bridge Trading vest with all the Tactical Tailor mag pouches and shingles hoping that this wide mag release might get caught on the gear. Hmmmm, I had to force it to get caught, and that's not a fair evaluation.
Maybe dragging the rifle backwards on the exposed pouch corners would trip it, and then it SNAGGED! Aha! A weakness in the design !
Okay, okay, that's not right because I deliberately forced the issue.
I'm going to have to take my M14 out coyote hunting with the MOLLE vest/Tac vest on to see if things work out. Will report back to you later!
So far, this upgrade has been really interesting as I attempt to find negative things about this unit. I'm very pleased!
Cheers,
Barney
