Another rifle conundrum - which 30-06 rifle to keep?

Hello all,

I'm after your considered insight as I ponder unloading one of two unfired 30-06 rifles I have had for a while. I need to make room or be forced to buy another gun cabinet. I'm interested in which you would consider off-loading.

1 - Savage 110 Ultralite with carbon Proof Research barrel. Indeed light. Love the camo. Love the threaded barrel. Love the accu trigger and stock

2 - CZ 557 20", not the eclipse. Like the feel of that synthetic stock with that palm swell and the shorter barrel (which make for nicer handling) but LOVE that buttery action. Don't like that it's not mag-fed.

I have the dies, brass and powders but don't really have the appetite to load two different recipes, so one will be looking for a new home soon.

Were it you, which would you keep? Why?
 
I have a 557 in 308, I would be interested in your 557. If you decide to sell it, I like the 557 platform. My 308 has detached mags. I have an 4 and 10 round mag for it. IMG_1816.jpeg

I have a 557 LUX II in 8x57 (my favourite cartridge). Very nice rifle, came from a young fellow between Kamloops and Merritt. Now that we are on the topic, I might have to take it out and dust off a couple of my favourite rocks this afternoon.
 
I had almost this same conundrum recently…
Multiple 30/06’s and running out of safe room.
So I solved the problem with one of them; I sent it off to K&S to get rebarreled in 280AI. Problem solved :)
Then I attempted to sell a few I didn’t feel particularly married to but that didn’t work out for me.
The market is not what it once was (not just in valuation) and my immediate solve was to buy a new safe and keep them.
Nice safe, on sale and has room for more guns…it is a good time to buy if you can afford it, lol.
And that other 30/06 will likely get sent out once the other returns as I don’t have a 25/06 (or AI?).

I have no problem getting rid of rifles, they're always gifted to my son. I would never own a Savage therefore, it gets the boot. I like the CZ however, the barrel is to damn short, it gets the boot, as well. Sell them both and purchase something that you really love.

Same problem, my son gets the toys….but out of respect I would never gift him a Savage. lol
…buy yourself a quality 50 gun vault, use the sale of the savage as a deposit and keep the CZ…and then you can buy another nice toy every week for the next year before coming back to this forum for more recommendations. There…fixed it !!
 
Do you hunt or use either of these rifles? Are they mostly safe queens "just because everyone needs a 30-06?"

If that's the only reason they're in the safe, and you really could care less about either of them, sell them.

If you're already shooting/hunting a 30-06 you haven't mentioned, why keep two unfired (new old stock) rifles in the safe?

There comes a time for all of us when we have to trim the herd, for all sorts of good reasons.

I've been doing this for the past ten years or more.

I kept rifles for all sorts of reasons, one of which they could be depended on to shoot to point of aim, consistently, from a cold barrel and for the next 5 shots, without worrying about flyers or drift.

There were all sorts of other reasons, such as rifles that would group well with any ammo they were fed. Of course, scopes had to be adjusted for different lots or weights.

Whatever your comfort level tells you to do, in this case, do it.

The plan was to hunt with one. Don't need both to do that.
