Got a chance to take my (colorful) daughter out yesterday to try-out her new Savage Rascal. She was thrilled to have a gun that "fit her" and by the end of it...was giving me a hard time for only bringing a box and a 1/2 of CCI CB longs! A bit of drizzle did nothing to dampen her spirits, and I'm reasonably sure I'll get asked to head-out again with her today. Pictured below is her putting it through it's paces, and the end results...a Diet Coke can she called "the grouse". :) Savage really got this rifle right guys, and while I've never tried some of the other youth offerings like the Crikett, Mini Bolt, TC, etc....I can say in all honesty that if you want to buy a rifle with a kid in mind, I don't think you can go wrong with the Rascal.

Bet you can guess why I didn't buy one with a brightly-colored stock! :) Gotta' love the enthusiasm!

Started at about 20 yards to get used to the peep sights (she had no experience with them) then moved-out to 30 yards. Most of the hits pushed the can back so she was hitting it consistently out to about 50 yards by the time we were done. This wasn't a "tight group" kind of outing for sure, just a "make the pop can dance" kind of thing. :) With the drizzle outside, we got some great spray coming off the can every once in a while. She brought that can home to show mom too.

Good job, getting your daughter out shooting. She looks to be having a good, safe time... that is the key with kids, making it fun and not too long. Mine are older now but started shooting at a young age... grouse hunting was always a great father/daughter, father/son outing.

Good work. I learned the hard way getting my friend to bring out his daughter. Paper targets are boring for kids. Get them something that moves or makes a sound when they hit it. A nice reactive target makes it more fun.

Thanks guys. Yes, she's the middle child....and let's just say there have been WAY more pop cans, coffee cans, 1L apple juice cans, clay pigeons shot than paper targets with my kids. Tight groups mean nothing to little ones, making stuff bounce/rattle/fly goes WAY WAY further in generating interest with them. The same reason I hit-up all the perch/sunfish spots when I take them fishing. Instant reward! :)

I should add, not every shot was a hit..but most were. I was her "spotter"...telling her if I saw the bullet impact left/right/ahead/behind on the misses. Helped her get the sights dialed-in pretty good, and rattled my plans to put low power optics on the thing in the near future.

Boy oh bouy, post card perfect, that top photo.
Bench'in/paper is boring.
What better way to get the yun'uns to shoot than
without a bench or rest.
Makes for shooting fur soooo much easier in the long term.
That kid is styl'in......
Love these posts.
Use up all their time now as they do get older and move on....... :(
