ANOTHER scope mount question

I have an ARMS 18 mount for a Norc M14S.

I carefully mounted the scope and got to the range and I was shooting a foot and a half to the right at 50 yards.

Hmph.

Sure enough, looking over the scope I could see the scope offset to the left a bit.

Pulled the scope off and rezero'd the irons for a reference.

Dug around on CGN and found Hungry's repost of M14 Doc's directions which I had seen before. Tried again; this time with everything loose I pushed the rear of the mount over to the left by prying on it...gently.

A bit better but still offset from centre:

I see the "wedge" that fits inside the stripper clip guide is offset to the right a noticeable amount

Also found Different's long and informative post re using a Dremel to fine-fit:

"Some commercial M14 receivers may have extra material at the top left hand front corner of the barrel ring. This may interfere with the fit up of the Atlantic Research Marketing Systems # 18 scope mount. Another tip is to use some modeling clay to indicate spots under the mount where the receiver is interfering. Apply a thin layer of modeling clay on the receiver where the mount fits against it. Put talcum powder on the under side of the mount to prevent the clay from adhering to the mount. Fit the mount up moderately snug. Then carefully remove the mount from the receiver. Observe where the mount is contacting the receiver. Using a Dremel tool with a sanding drum, carefully and slowly remove the interfering metal from the scope mount. Go slow. Repeat this procedure until all screws can be properly torqued."

So...before I power up the Dremel...any other good ideas?

Did you remove the clip that holds the bolt onto the side of the mount ?...45ACP advises to do so and when I mounted mine without it I had none of your issues .

This seems quite common with the ARMS mount. It seems that many people remove the circlip on the side mounting screw. I had a similar issue, and solved it by keeping the dovetail quite loose, and removing the forward set screw completely, until I had the mount in the correct position. The forward set screw is a little long and interfered with the hand-guard, so I replaced it with a shorter one.

As Sluggo said the front screw should be replaced as well so you dont have to put a notch in your handguard....contact Hungry and he will send you a better one as he is great guy like that ....

I did remove the circlip on the side mount bolt; as mentioned I read the stickies and I know M14Doc/45ACPKING is one of the most experienced references available.

I already received a couple of set screws from Barney for the front pad retainer screw. BTDT.

Thanks for the replies but I think I may have to start removing some metal...as much as I want to avoid that.

......Don't do it!!!, its a mistake I bet.- I thought the same thing with my ARMS mount, But really I just did not have the mount loose enough, make sure the forward height adjustment is also not interfering.
