Finally got to get out again this year and see what the situation with the coyotes are. Found out that they are not in the same area as last year. Thats kind of good because I scored some new farm land to go on. Also stopped to talk with a RM guy doing some work that seen 7 coyotes a few days before with location and name of the farmer who owns the land. Score!
Going to have to talk with him next time I get to go out.
Anyways the morning was a bust. Got in and set up before first light, but nothing came to the field that Ive seen them in a few times now. We decided to walk down the fence line a Km and a half to a little valley that I bumped two in last time I was there. This time took it slow and we had lots of fog for cover to get into position. Setup and started with lucky bird and dsg cottontail. Right away had about 4 ravens come right in to check us out, but.... no yotes. Started playing around with some female howls and right away had two start calling back to me. Played with them for about 10 minutes and pulled them in to I think about the 300 yrd range (couldnt see past about 300 because of fog and some low ground). Sat for acouple minutes glassing waiting for them to poke their lil noses out, but... they wouldnt bite. Coyote 1 us 0 They couldnt wind us because I had my partner setup to cover that way and there was not much fog so he could see past 400 and plus they would have to come expose themselves to the high side of the lil valley to get there. Oh well next time and I needed the exercise.
Jumped back in the truck had some apple cider and a doughnut and drove to the next farmers place just up the road some. I havent connected with this farmer yet, just his wife and she was fine with us on their land, but still wanted to talk with him. Pulled into the yard knocked on the door and guess what... no ones home. heh Started walking back to the truck and looking around the yard to see if anyones around, I see a coyote walking from the barn up a hill towards the fields. He looks back at us just causal and keeps walking. He looked like a big dog, so back in the truck and hes going our direction, perfect we'll just drive up the road some and wait. Sure enough hes going to walk straight in front of us. We get setup and not a minute later some Enbridge guys hauling a bobcat start driving by and the yote sees this. Damnn lol Well I range him at 369, not bad I could do it, but.... these enbridge guys stop to watch, geez thanks guys, put more pressure on me. lol Anyways I adjust my 4.5 moa for the shot and Im like way fricken low. Coyotes 2 us 0 Embarrassed I watch the guys start driving off and start thinking why the heck I was so low... Im about 15.75" low at 375. That should be 4.25 moa, no? I gave it a extra quarted click because the yote was still walking. After racking my brain for awhile the only thing I can think of is that my scope (reticle) was cold and didnt move as much as it should of. Anyone have that happen before? Is that possible? Its a vortex viper 6-20x44. arg
Driving again down the road to the next farm, still embarrassed we see two more yotes mousing some fields we dont have permission on, so we keep driving. Pull into the yard of the next farm and itsa guy we know. He aint home but his farm hand is. We chat with him and he tells us a place that he saw 6 the other day. Off we go. Bump 2 going into the place that we were headed to. Just that kind of a day. Pull up in between some bales and cows get out and look around. Dont see anything so we start getting our stuff together for the ugly humpin in the hills that we have to do here soon. Look up and theres this coyote walking up one of their paths. Didnt even know we where there. I range him... 375, what.... not this #### again. lol My partner gets his 243 lined up, I bark and he stops and looks around and my buddy shoots. Just a inch or two low, didnt compensate for the incline.... arg another miss. Coyote 3 us 0 The coyote didnt know where or what was happening so he started running towards us into some low ground. Thinking that he was coming straight at us we hide behind the bales waiting for him to pop out. Waited 5 minutes and nothing, so we decided to head up there to see if there was any trace of blood. Start humpin up the hill towards the spot. As we get to some bushes my partner tells me just to hang back while he goes though. Not a second later this yote hiding in this bush bolts up the hill away from us. My partner trys a shot through the bush but not luck. He survives another day. arg coyotes 4 us 0. We go through this bush to some higher ground and take a break to look around some. Out in the field about 1000 past the cows there is 5 yotes mousing with no care in the world about us losing 4 nothing to their buddy. arg lol After our lil break we cut back across the hills alittle ways to where we bumped those other guys coming into this place. Set up for some calling and after about 30 minutes we give up. Whats that 5 - 0 now? Sure we'll call it that.
Start headin er back towards the truck and getting back to where we were glassin those other coyotes back in the field. Now they are a little closer to the truck. Start back to the truck and glass some more , but its open field and they are in some low ground. We decide its time for some apple cider and more doughnuts. Fire up the truck to warm up some and just chillax. I have a 03 gmc duramax thats got a 4" straight pipe for an exhaust. Its pretty loud for a truck. Well anyways a few minutes later we look over and see there of the coyotes now not more then 500 from us. This gets our attention a lil now. We kind of keep a eye on them as we keep relaxing in the truck sippin some cider. A few minutes pass and my partner looks past me in the field and this one coyote is 200 yrds away from us mousing. He doesnt even know we are there and the truck is still running. We're like what the hell..... Time to throw a round in the 223 because hes mousing straight towards us. I range him at 147 and still coming. I couldnt believe it he didnt hear or see us as we were right out in plain site for him. I barked and he looked up for his the last time. coyotes 5 us 1 and fur on the ground. w00ty w00t heh Atleast we didnt leave empty handed.
